Wrestling With Sin: The Third Verse

We continue our look at some of the darker stories that involve pro wrestlers…whether backstage, behind the scenes or completely outside of the business.

We start this edition with the news that former AWA, World Class and even WWE wrestler “Rock N Roll” Buck Zumhofe has been sentenced to over 25 years in jail for the sexual molestation of a girl starting when she was 15 years old and spanned 12 years from 1999 to 2011. While the victim’s name hasn’t been released, it is believed to be a close relative….possibly a daughter.

Before the sentencing, Zumhofe admitted to the allegations made against him. After the sentence was issued to Zumhofe, his attorney requested a moment to confer with his client…who then attempted to escape. Zumhofe was tackled and subdued by authorities. He should be released from prison when he is 80 years of age.

In January of 2014, the eldest son of WWE Hall Of Fame wrestler Ted Dibiase…and a former pro wrestler himself…Mike Dibiase was arrested after a 12 hour stand off with police in Texas. Police had gotten word that Mike Dibiase who had outstanding warrants was in a building complex in Amarillo, Texas. Police were warned that he may have been armed and dangerous, so a remote controlled robot was sent in to the building spraying tear gas to flush him out and he was arrested.

Mike Dibiase, sadly, is no stranger to troubles with the law and this was his second arrest. Below is his mug shot following the stand off with police…

On July 24th 2013….a high speed chase ended with a crash in Florida. The person behind the wheel of the crash was former WWE developmental wrestler Brian McGhee AKA “DT Porter” in the WWE’s developmental system. McGhee was wanted for the stabbing death of his ex girlfriend Bianca McGaughey. After stabbing his ex….McGhee jumped in to his car and fled prompting a high speed chase with authorities. According to court documents, McGhee admitted to stabbing McGaughey on three separate occasions while on the phone with his mother and sister and again to the arresting officer.

Brian McGhee had become increasingly despondent after his release from WWE developmental. While not completely known the reasons for his release, McGhee had posted this cryptic message on his Facebook page while under contract…

“Guys, I don’t know how much longer I can handle this. Every day is a constant struggle to keep my sanity. I love wrestling and it’s all I ever wanted to do. Already going crazy since I’ve been for like ten months now, but it gets worse. Every day a trainer goes out of his way to rib or disrespect me in front of the boys because I’ve been out so long. I can’t clear myself. I wanna wrestle more than anything, but I don’t even know who I am anymore. It’s so fucking hard. I just feel it just building inside of me and I don’t know how much longer I can contain it. I have daydreams of just fucking everyone up on some real shit. I’m not a kid. I’m a fucking man. But what do you do when the people in charge of helping you get to the main roster are the ones making your life the hardest. I’ve been drinking almost every day. It’s to the point to where I keep Vodka and Gin in my trunk. Help me!”

Brian McGhee has been charged with first degree murder…

John Croitoru was known to wrestling fans as “Bruiser Bedlam,” “Johnny K-9” or “Taras Bulba.” He wrestled for various territories as well as Smoky Mountain and the WWE. The law knows him as a completely different individual…the leader of a motorcycle gang named “Satan’s Choice.” No doubt about it, Croitoru has a rap sheet as long as the paper Chris Jericho rolled out naming all 1,004 holds he knew…

It includes assault, drug trafficking, extortion, conspiracy to commit murder and yes he has even been accused of actual first degree murder.

Here’s a video package of Croitoru during his wrestling career…

William Welch AKA “The Messiah” was a hardcore wrestler who competed in various indie promotions including XPW and CZW. One night in 2002 while at home, two men attacked Welch pummeling him and then proceeded to cut off his thumb. According to Welch, he did not know who his assailants were, but has a pretty good idea who was responsible for the attack….Former XPW promoter and pornographer Rob Black. William Welch has gone on record saying he had an affair with Black’s wife…Lizzy Borden. Some believe in an act of revenge, Rob Black hired the two men to send a message. That was never substantiated. Nobody was ever charged in the assault.

The attack on William Welch made national headlines and his story was featured on America’s Most Wanted…

Stephen “Gatorwolf” Ketcher was a pro wrestler who often teamed with the late “Chief” Jay Strongbow in the WWE in the 1980’s. He was still involved in the business by holding wrestling camps and seminars in his hometown in Colorado. In March of 2014, he became a fugitive of the law and wanted for questioning in a case of him having sex with minors. He faces seven counts of sexual assault on a child- a third degree felony- and seven counts of sexual assault- a first degree misdemeanor. He recently surrendered to police and is now awaiting trial.
