Book or Cook? The Booking of Los Matadores

Craig Wilson and Brian Damage

The WWE roster is filled with “superstars” at every level. There are the main roster guys who regularly appear on Raw and SmackDown, those who are used as glorified jobbers and those who are barely used at all. In this series of pieces, we will take an individual wrestler barely used and decide if they are worth keeping or should they be let go. However, today we do things a bit differently by deciding to Book or Cook a tag team: namely Los Matadores.

Craig: To start with I should see I quite like Primo and Epico. I don’t for a moment think they are main event talents or anything but I’ve always enjoyed their work. I’ve even enjoyed a lot of their work under the masks of Los Matadores – as Fernando and Diego – despite thinking that the gimmick was an awkward fit and likely to be short lived.

Whilst it might have lasted longer than most would have expected, it has outlived its lifespan. That’s for sure. As someone that constantly beats the drum for a return to a good solid tag team division, I’d happily see them revert back to a former guise and join what is starting to shape up to be a fairly good tag team scene in the WWE.

So do are we in favour of keeping their Tito ‘El Matador’ Santana inspired gimmick, repackage them or cook them?

Brian: Primo and Epico are two great workers who consistently have solid matches. Their biggest downfall has been their personalities…which they sorely lack. In McMahon’s world, that is a big problem to have. Hence, that is why he gave them the Matadores gimmick in the first place. They can’t just be Primo and Epico Colon out there in the ring because I think a majority of WWE fans would ignore them. Sadly, in the WWE..they’ll need a gimmick.

The Los Matadores gimmick wasn’t the answer and right off the top of my head, I can’t think of another gimmick to help them out. The only thing I think that could be beneficial to the team would bring in a mouthpiece…maybe Zeb Colter? If not him, the perfect fit would be to bring back none other than Carlito Colon.

Craig: I agree with the mouthpiece bit. Guess any shortcomings were previously covered by fact Rosa Mendez was at ringside and attention was almost always elsewhere when she was…

Zeb Colter would be a good fit but I think that Carlito would be ideal. There was talk of an impending return for him but then there were rumours of a low ball offer. I could also see them fit as part of a stable. Two single wrestlers, a tag team and a manager. Perhaps that’s something for Zeb unless he fits in somewhere with this awful League of Nations stuff but can’t see him and Sheamus working all that well together.

I think you’re right overall though, Brian. The current gimmick doesn’t suit them but it would seem that the WWE think that they need a gimmick of some sort to work. Bit between a rock and a hard place with this one…

Brian: Their biggest downfall is they lack charisma…otherwise….they are two truly gifted performers. I think in a way, the Los Matadores gimmick helped them because they wore masks and went under different aliases. I know that most fans always knew who they were, but concealing their identities allows the WWE to bring them back as the Colons or under some other gimmick.

Craig: we can all agree then that they need a change. They’ve fallen out of favour in the tag team division and are just drifting aimlessly at the moment. Perhaps the new year will result in a new gimmick. As you say, Brian, they are a talented duo. Just need a good gimmick to boot. It’s a definite book from me.

Brian: I agree that they should book them. They are just too damn talented in ring not to.

  1. Book. Another great wrestling dynasty. Give them back their real names and let them follow in the footsteps of their Father. I know it’s now a PG Wrestling universe but Carlos Sr. had some incredible, albeit bloody matches that I will never forget. A true Superstar.
