Sunday Sermon: Royal Rumble 2016 Fallout & Road to WrestleMania 32

Craig Wilson, Jamie Lithgow, Brian Damage & Russ Morgan

With a very impressive Royal Rumble event out of the way, the road to WrestleMania 32 is in full flow. With that in mind, today’s Sunday Sermon sees the team discuss the fallout from the Royal Rumble and look ahead to WrestleMania with a focus on what is likely to feature on the show. Without further ado…

Triple HCraig: Well I enjoyed the Royal Rumble for sure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not that pleased with the WWE title being used as a pawn in a storyline but that said it all made sense. As I said in last week’s Sermon, I felt the WWE was backed into a whole and it was obvious that either Roman Reigns would win or that Triple H would – despite hopes to the contrary.

I’m thinking that at Fastlane Roman Reigns triumphs in the triple threat with Dean Ambrose and Brock Lesnar with the Wyatts costing Brock and setting up Bray vs Lesnar at Mania, something hinted at during the Rumble. And on the back of other stuff at the Rumble I’m thinking a card something like…

  • WWE Champion Triple H vs. Roman Reigns
  • Brock Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt.
  • Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
  • WWE Divas Champion Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks

I’m not altogether convinced by the main event title match. Don’t see how Roman Reigns becomes ‘the man’ by beating someone that was never ‘the man’ himself but, hey ho, I guess that’s where we are at.

When you factor in The Rock, and whatever his role will be, then we’ve got some big names – albeit in the Rock’s case, a very familiar one – but big names nonetheless.

What else do we expect to see on?

Jamie: I’d say three of those four proposals are a lock. For me the jury is still out on Kevin Owens’ opponent. He will face Zayn at some point, but will it be at Wrestlemania? I genuinely don’t know, plus you can make a case for him facing AJ Styles after dumping him out of the Rumble.

I do share your thoughts on the Rumble and the title match too. It was a great Rumble match, but not the finish I was personally wanting. But you’re right, it does make sense. Triple H costing Reigns the title was the right call, but for me The Game didn’t have to win the damn thing too. Ah well…

So I’m with you on the title match and Lesnar’s opponent, any thoughts on who The Undertaker will face and what exactly The Rock might do?

Sasha BanksBrian: I agree as well…the Royal Rumble match outcome made sense..albeit not what I had wanted. Triple H is a proven great heel and is capable of carrying Roman Reigns to a solid match. With that said, not to quote Tony Schiavone, but will that match put asses in the seats? I guess Wrestlemania sells itself…but the main event (If it is Triple H vs Roman Reigns) just seems blah.

Bray Wyatt vs Brock Lesnar is a lock in my opinion as is Charlotte vs Sasha Banks…other than that…I think everything else is up in the air.

Craig: I’ve seen rumours online about Taker vs. John Cena and it’s worth noting that Cena posted a picture yesterday of the inside of a gym and saying hello to an old friend…

Jamie: Surely not?! The man is a freak! To be fair though, that’s a rumour I hope is true. If this is true then I assume WWE are waiting to the last possible minute to judge Cena’s fitness. That does make sense because John Cena vs. The Undertaker sells itself, no build required for that. If Cena doesn’t make it then maybe WWE will finally give us a Taker/Sting confrontation instead. Not a match I have to add, but an angle between the two would be cool, especially in Texas and with Sting going into the Hall of Fame.

Brian: I believe Sting is still injured…while I do not know the extent of his injuries…..I don’t think he’ll be ready for another match just yet. The fact that we are even using John Cena’s name as a possible opponent for the Undertaker at Wrestlemania is maddening. He can’t possibly be well enough so soon……right?!?

Craig: You would think he isn’t ready yet and would be a mistake to rush him back if it was to cause further damage.

Here’s someone we haven’t mentioned: Daniel Bryan. Is there a potential place for him there? Or are we all starting to assume that his time in the WWWE is quite limited…?

Also, and it was a point raised in our Rumble predictions re who would New Day still have ahead of them if they won, who do the tag champs face now?

There are a lot of questions but, as yet, very little answers…

daniel-bryan-wrestlemania-30Jamie: If what I’ve read about Daniel Bryan is true then I’m holding onto the hope – it is a long shot though – that he might actually wrestle at Wrestlemania. Apparently his doctor has cleared him to wrestle, but WWE’s doctor has not. The fact that a doctor has cleared him keeps the door open. Granted we are talking about a man’s health, but if WWE find themselves staring down the barrel of a Wrestlemania without John Cena, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Sting, The Rock or Batista wrestling a match then one would think the prospect of getting a third doctor’s advise on Daniel Bryan might come into consideration.

As for The New Day, that’s a tricky one. The Usos are the only other viable champions, but surely that feud cannot continue to Wrestlemania? If an NXT team is not brought up – please let it be Jordan & Gable! – then I can see them being involved in one of those silly celebrity matches. Maybe something with The Rock? If nothing else, The New Day are funny and talented enough to make a celebrity match worth watching.

Brian: Why oh why do I get the feeling the New Day will take on the Rock and the Usos at Wrestlemania?

Jamie: I get that feeling too, but can they really keep The New Day feuding with The Usos for two more months? I’m not bored of their rivalry or anything like that, but they’re already deep into their feud and Wrestlemania is still some time away.

Craig: So we are thinking that Mania is going to look something like this:

  • WWE Champion Triple H vs. Roman Reigns
  • The Rock & The Usos vs. The New Day
  • John Cena vs. The Undertaker
  • Brock Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt.
  • Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
  • WWE Divas Champion Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks

Throw in an IC and US title match then we pretty much have the full show.

What about the likes of Chris Jericho and The Dudley Boyz? Anything for them? WrestleMania will be around about the time the Dudleys mark 20 years in the business…

Brian: Don’t forget the Andre battle royal….what about AJ Styles? Kalisto? Neville?

Russ: I actually said in a forum a couple of days before that it wouldn’t surprise me if Triple H won the Rumble. It made sense to me. It was the only way Tripper at his age can win the belt clean.

Really happy with AJ Styles entrance and performance. I think he has a solid run in him.

Craig: Of course, the Andre the Giant Battle Royal. I imagine everyone else will be thrown into that, right? There’s certainly plenty left: Social Outcasts, the Wyatts excluding Bray, The League of Nations, Dean Ambrose etc. Strong enough talent pool for a Battle Royal, that’s for sure.

Jamie: I’d take Ambrose out of the battle royal, as I assume he’ll have a singles match on the card. There’s no way he goes from being last eliminated at the Rumble and the main event of FastLane to doing nothing important at Wrestlemania. As we’ve not really mentioned him, shall we just say he faces AJ Styles? Again, surely he hasn’t been brought straight onto the main roster just to make up the numbers?

There’s obvious question marks over the above, but I feel like this won’t be too far away from what Wrestlemania actually looks like.
