WWE Fastlane 2016 Preview & Predictions

Jamie Lithgow, Craig Wilson & Brian Damage

Tonight the WWE hosts Fastlane which will determine who of Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar and Dean Ambrose will go to face Triple H at WrestleMania. Elsewhere, AJ Styles has his rubber match with Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens defends his IC title against Dolph Ziggler, the Wyatts face Kane, Big Show and Ryback, Brie Bella challenges Charlotte for her divas title and more. Today the team share their thoughts and predictions on the show.

Pre-Show: Two-out-of-three falls match for the WWE United States Championship
Kalisto (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio

Jamie: Is this feud still going on? Serious question, why do WWE keep pairing Mexican/Latino wrestlers together in feuds? Del Rio’s big rival previously was Rey Mysterio, who in turn had a storied relationship with Eddie Guerrero. Just an observation. Anyway, this feud over the US Title has done little for me so far, and I don’t see that changing.

Winner: Kalisto

Craig: This must be like part 100 of the feud between these pair right? I can’t get too invested in either character but that’s more to do with the WWE itself rather than anything about either competitor. This back and forth has been of no benefit to either man really. A shame and a bit of a missed opportunity.

Winner, and new US Champion: ADR.

Brian: I think this match should have been put on the actual show and not the pre show. I think it has the potential to be really good…if not great. I don’t see Kalisto retaining just for the simple fact that Sin Cara has returned from injury and can refocus on the Lucha Dragon tag team.

Winner: Alberto Del Rio (New US champ)

IC Title Match
Kevin Owens (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler

Jamie: Granted I’ve only seen a couple episodes of Raw this year, but I’m sure last time I watched it Dolph Ziggler was wrestling Kevin Owens. While this should be a very good match, it’s symptomatic of WWE’s lack of effort in the mid-card that I have zero enthusiasm for this match because I feel like I’ve already seen it several times already.

Winner: Kevin Owens

Craig: You could almost lift word for word my response to the Kalisto vs. ADR match except I am invested in Owens’ character, although even that is fading. In this match he needs to quickly and/or convincingly despatch Ziggler and move on. He doesn’t deserve to be stuck in this programme and the fans don’t deserve having to put up with it either.

Winner: Owens.

Brian: I think this will be a good match, but a pretty obvious outcome. Dolph Ziggler is a glorified jobber in this contest.

Winner: Kevin Owens

Ryback, Big Show and Kane vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper, Erick Rowan and Braun Strowman) (with Bray Wyatt)

Jamie: Ha ha, this will be shit!

Winners: The Wyatt Family

Craig: Oh God, this will be the shits. Hopefully a quick and convincing victory for the Wyatt Family or the WWE might as well not bother with them.

Winners: Wyatts, right?

Brian: This match will be a messy, sloppy clusterf@ck and in the end…I don’t see any possible way for anybody other than the Wyatt family winning.

Winners: The Wyatts

AJ Styles vs. Chris Jericho

Jamie: Now we’re talking. I did catch this match on Raw, and very good it was too. This time I do not mind a Raw rematch on a pay per view. I would hope that AJ Styles will win because this feud is highly unlikely to rumble on until Wrestlemania, thus AJ should enter his ‘Mania feud with momentum. On the other hand, he did win the first encounter. I’m thinking AJ wins, but Jericho gets his heat back by turning heel.

Winner: AJ Styles

Craig: This should be good and comfortably the best match of the evening. AJ Styles is very good in the ring as is Jericho who now occupies the getting folk over phase. This programme is all about having Styles learn the WWE style without having to go down to NXT so it serves a purpose. This should be the last match of this programme before, presumably, Styles goes to WrestleMania to do something fairly significant. IC or US title?

Winner: AJ Styles

Brian: Another possible good to great match. Especially if they are given time to tell a story in the ring.

Winner: AJ Styles

Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks vs. Naomi and Tamina

Jamie: Can’t we just have Becky vs. Sasha?! That said, this is one of two womens matches on a PPV, both of which have an established reason for being. Last time that happened? Progress is progress I guess.

Winners: Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks

Craig: I’ve zero interest in the latter half of this match-up while the former are two female performers that deserve to be doing something a lot better and more meaningful than facing off against Naomi and Tamina. What a waste.

Winners: Becky and Sasha

Brian: I can’t help but think this should have been placed on the pre show. I really do not care who wins either way.

Winners: Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks

Divas Title Match
Charlotte (c) (with Ric Flair) vs. Brie Bella

Jamie: Okay, so I have missed the last couple episodes of Raw, but why is Brie Bella all of a sudden getting a title shot? Is she now a babyface again because we’ve remembered that she’s Daniel Bryan’s wife? Ah who cares, she’s gonna lose anyway.

Winner: Charlotte

Craig: I’m worried about how far the WWE will play on the sympathy around Bryan’s retirement… could Brie win the divas title? That would be absolutely brutal. But I fear that we can’t rule it out. In fact, I have a horrible feeling it’s exactly what will happen.

Winner, and new Divas champion, Brie Bella.

Brian: Probably Brie Bella’s swan song in the WWE. Charlotte is building slowly as a heel champion. Charlotte should win hands down.

Winner: Charlotte

Triple threat match to determine the #1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 32
Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar

Jamie: The reason I’ve not been watching WWE on a regular basis is right here. This match doesn’t matter, just as the Royal Rumble didn’t matter. Nothing matters because a blind man can see that Triple H will be defending his title against Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania. Even if Dean Ambrose wins this match, it doesn’t matter because somehow Roman Reigns will end up facing Triple H. Oh, I also assume Bray Wyatt will take care of Lesnar here.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Craig: On Monday night Ambrose dropped the IC title in order for us to believe that he will be the one facing Triple H at WrestleMania. He won’t be, though, as Jamie says it will be Reigns. In fact, the reception the entrances of Triple H and Reigns get at WrestleMania will probably be the story of the night. Fans will shit all over it. But as for this one, as Jamie alludes to Bray will cost Brock and that’ll set up their Mania match. Wonder what Ambrose ends up doing on the biggest show of the year but that’s a discussion for a later date.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Brian: I want to believe that this match will not be predictable. I want to believe something big will happen that will blow our minds. In the end, I see Bray Wyatt screwing Brock Lesnar in this match and Roman Reigns winning. I hope I’m wrong.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Jamie: This show doesn’t matter. Sometimes the obvious is satisfying – like Charlotte defeating Brie and facing Sasha Banks at Wrestlemania – and sometimes it is just not worth bothering with – the inevitable match between Reigns and Triple H coming to fruition. Either way, what you will see tonight is WWE going through the motions in order to establish the Wrestlemania card. I just hope some of the matches are entertaining in the process.

Craig: There’s very little new here and even less of interest. I think this event will get the following treatment: I’ll check out what people say is really good and watch those bits. I imagine that’ll be AJ/Jericho and the main event. The rest seems the sort of thing that should be saved for Raw and in some instances Smackdown!

Brian: Not much here in the way of anything we haven’t seen on Raw or Smackdown. I anticipate a few good matches but nothing that will blow this show out of the water.

  1. Style will probably end up feuiding with Owens at WM32, but I really want to see that Fastlane match between him and Jericho in Houston. Alas, probably not gonna happen. Brie will win the match, but not the belt–Charlotte gets herself DQ’ed. Owens will easily defeat Ziggler. Lynch and Banks, winners, period. Wyatts, they win, but who gives a shit? And Reigns wins, but I am pulling for the Ambrose upset. Will give the card a 5 out of 10 rating–only because of Styles, Owens, Lynch, and Banks. All other card members suck ass.
