Craig Wilson & Brian Damage
It’s that time again as we look back at This Week in Wrestling. In this edition Craig discusses Zack Ryder’s IC title reign while Brian shares some of the more interesting pictures and videos he’s stumbled upon this week.
The Destruction of a WrestleMania moment
As a stand alone show, WrestleMania 32 was flawed enough but if you factor in booking decisions made the following evening on Raw it became even worse. One such baffling booking decision concerns Zack Ryder.
On the grandest stage of them all, contrary to our predictions, Ryder triumphed in the opening match at WrestleMania in the ladder match to claim the Intercontinental Championship. Even though I’m not much of a fan of Ryder, it was a fun moment to see and was made nicer with Ryder’s Dad joining him in the ring to celebrate.
This could have been something big for the WWE. Years of being buried by the company could also have been over for him. On the subject of over, the crowd reaction indicated that Ryder was indeed just that.
On the face of it, a simple ‘underdog triumphs/makes a comeback’ was obvious route. And why not? He’s a man that still generates a strong reaction from the fanbase, is a solid enough in-ring worker and can speak on the mic.
Yet less than 24 hours the WWE cut the legs from under him with The Miz, of all people, defeating him to be crowned the new Intercontinental Title.
Don’t get me wrong, The Miz is under utilised. I actually think he could be much better deployed by the WWE as he has a cocky brashness that the company should make use of.
But a belt doesn’t make the man, the man makes the belt so by simply making The Miz IC champion isn’t enough to get him over as a serious player in the WWE. That part has to come first then he adds prestige to the title and, to a certain extent, vice versa.
The feud could, and indeed probably will, work out in the long run but in just 24 hours the WWE spiked what was a feelgood moment for no real reason. When you consider the WWE seemingly is hell-bent these days on creating ‘WrestleMania moments’, it seems strange to create one and undo it the very next night…
