This is the 75th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker side of professional wrestling. Many of these stories involve such topics as sex, greed, drugs, arrests and sometimes even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, we do not condone or condemn the alleged involved. We are simply retelling these stories that have been told throughout the years.
Urn-ing Sunny’s Hatred
In the mid 1990’s in the WWF, a real life heated feud developed between two individuals. The two individuals were not in any way wrestlers, but a manager and a valet. I am talking about Paul Bearer and Sunny who hated each other so much it lasted for years after their WWF/E careers had ended.
While the two never got physical with one another, that didn’t stop the two from spewing hatred against the other. While it is not exactly known what started this bitter feud between the two, it was certainly there for years. On one occasion, Bearer walked into a dressing room saw Sunny with her boyfriend Skip aka Chris Candido and saw a broom in the corner of the room.
Bearer would quickly reply to both Sunny and Candido pointing to the broom…‘Is that how your girlfriend is getting home tonight?’
Candido went into an angry frenzy and tore up an adjacent room knowing that if he hit Bearer he would either be fired or worse, have to deal with Bearer’s friend the Undertaker. It got so bad between both Sunny and Bearer that Jim Cornette who was a friend to both was ordered to mediate the issues to no avail.
In the early 1990’s, Vince McMahon and the World Wrestling Federation held a nationwide search for a new announcer for their programming through Billboard magazine. The winner of that search was a radio DJ from Detroit, Michigan named Murray Hodgson.
Hodgson would sign a two year deal with the WWF, but would only work for the company a few weeks. He was fired by Vince McMahon for reasons that ‘He wasn’t very good on television.’ Six months later, Hodgson filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against McMahon and the WWF. He cited that WWF employee Pat Patterson made sexual advances to Hodgson and when he refused…he was fired.
Hodgson would later confront Vince McMahon on the Phil Donahue talk show accusing McMahon, Patterson and others in the company of trying to sweep these allegations under the rug. As it turned out, Hodgson’s own lawyer decided to drop him as a client after McMahon and his team of lawyers and independent private investigators discovered that this wasn’t Hodgson’s first sexual harassment lawsuit.
Apparently, Murray Hodgson made a career out of suing ex employer’s for the same accusations. The judge in his case not only dismissed his lawsuit, but allegedly called Murray Hodgson , ‘A Habitual liar and con man.’ Murray Hodgson would soon disappear from the spotlight. It is believed that Hodgson now lives and works as a night club owner in the Michigan area.
I-van to Kill You!
Former Canadian pro wrestler Ivan Radocaj aka Ivan the Giant aka Big John Radocaj aka The Croatian Giant was found beaten to death in front of his home in Manitoba, Canada in 2007. It was later revealed that his ex wife of only 3 weeks was behind the murder.
His ex, Melody Lynn Sanford was arrested and convicted of conspiracy to commit murder along with four other accomplices who carried out the killing. Two of which, were a mother and son named Rita Cushnie and Donald Richard. According to reports, three weeks after marrying Cushnie he requested a divorce.
His reasoning, was he felt that Cushnie was only after his money. Ivan Radocaj’s father said that his son asked him to buy a gun because he felt that Rita Cushnie would come after him and try to hurt him. All five involved in the murder plot were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Ivan Radocaj was only 43 at the time of his murder.
Swing Outside the Ring
Tony Norris, formerly known as Ahmed Johnson in the WWF, did a shoot interview making some serious allegations against other WWF wrestlers. He claimed that Dustin Runnels went “both ways” and he and his wife were ‘freaky.’ Norris said that Dustin lived the Goldust gimmick both in and out of the ring.
He accused both Dustin and Terri Runnels of being swingers with both men and women. Tony Norris also intimated that Shawn Michaels preformed gay acts to certain WWF big wigs to get his spot on the roster.
In 2000, around WCW’s dying days, van incident occurred between two luchadors and a gifted technical wrestler that ended one’s wrestling career. It apparently took place after a Nitro in the wrestler’s parking lot. Brad Armstrong was walking to his car when he was suddenly hit by a car driven by Juventud Guerrera.
Juvi and his friend, fellow luchador Psicosis, were playing a game of chicken in their cars when Juventud accidentally ran over Armstrong injuring both his knees. Some have speculated that both Juvi and Psicosis were heavily under the influence during this accident. Regardless if that was true or not, Brad Armstrong required extensive surgery on both knees subsequently ending his in ring career.
