Wrestling with Sin: The 98th Entry

Brian Damage

This is the 98th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.

Roma is Burning

Early in his career, Paul Roma claims he attended a party at the home of WWF agent Pat Patterson. Paul Roma said the reason he attended, was to get better acquainted with WWF management to further his career. According to Roma, he claims Patterson and his boyfriend Lou Dondero sat next to Paul on the couch.

Patterson allegedly hinted to Roma that if he “played around” with certain executives his career would be better off. Roma admits Patterson never fully came out and flirted with him directly, just put the idea in his mind. Roma claims that nothing ever happened between them and sites that as a possible reason why he was never properly pushed within the company.

In 2016, Texas independent wrestler Kyle Hawk was arrested on charges of prostitution. Hawk was arrested in a huge sex sting where undercover officers answered sex ads. The cops would agree to meet the suspects at a local hotel and agree on a price to exchange money for sex. Once a price was agreed upon, the suspects were then arrested.

Kyle Hawk was jailed and released on a $3,000 bond. Hawk would later issue an apology to his family, friends and fans on social media.

Justifiable Homicide?

Back in 2005, former TNA and independent wrestler Homicide claimed that his good friend and fellow wrestler Dan Maff was a pedophile. Without going into any specific details, It was believed that Maff had sex with someone who was underage in Homicide’s family. This is what Homicide had to say about Dan Maff…

“This is the last time you will hear or see me mentioning that jabroni’s name again. Dan Maff is done in the wrestling business. Finished. Maff blackballed himself. I did not blackball Maff. Promoters had to pick me or him, and all the promoters picked me because of what Maff did. There is only one side of the story and Maff fucked up and that is why he is done and no one is using him. Maff fucked with my family and fucked with my personal life. Maff is a pedophile. I hope fans can understand this. This shit is personal. This is my life. Maff screwed Maff and blackballed himself because of what he did. No promoter wants to use him because of what he did. Maff is done with wrestling.

I want everyone to know that I hate Dan Maff and I don’t respect him. He’s a piece of shit. This is my personal life and the last time ever I will mention this guys name again. This is done just like Maff’s career. I know fans want to know the whole story but this is very personal and that’s all I can say. I know fans want to hear that whole interview, but it’s better off not being up there because it’s real life. Maff is done.”

Now before this scandal, Dan Maff was red hot on the independent circuit wrestling for promotions like Jersey All Pro and Ring of Honor. According to Homicide, promoters were forced to choose between himself or Maff as he refused to work on the same cards as him. Maff was out of wrestling for several years but has since returned and apparently has wrestled on some of the same shows as Homicide.

In May of 2011, Gregory ‘Hurricane’ Helms and his live-in girlfriend Karen Blalock were on their way home from a restaurant on Helm’s motorcycle. Helms blew through a stop sign and lost control of his bike crash through a fence and onto a soccer field. His girlfriend suffered a broken neck while Helms suffered several broken bones and lacerations.

Helms would have to have his foot completely reconstructed with 4 metal plates and over 20 screws put in it. That wasn’t the worst part of it, police took a DNA sample from Helms at the scene of the crash and later determined Helms was driving under the influence and thus charged with a DUI offense. Thankfully the couple survived the crash and have since had a child.

The Great Brawl of Chyna

In April of 2010, model/actress Gabriela Targos claimed that she went to a hotel in Los Angeles to meet with her then good friend the late Joanie ‘Chyna’ Laurer. According to Targos, when she arrived at Chyna’s hotel room, she was greeted with punches, kicks and hair pulling. Targos also claimed that Chyna whipped her with a coat hanger and threatened to kill Targos.

Gabriela Targos would be able to leave the hotel room and immediately went to police. LAPD would investigate the matter and did admit that there were bruises on Targos’ body. After PD reviewed hotel videos and talked to hotel staff, they found that Targos had allegedly already had bruises on her before she entered Chyna’s room. Charges were never filed against Chyna and the case was closed due to lack of evidence.
