Top Five New Generation and Attitude Era WrestleMania matches

Jamie Lithgow and John Carbery

In last week’s Top Five we looked at the best WrestleMania matches from the Hulkamania era. We follow that up today by looking at the best matches to feature on the events during the New Generation and Attitude Eras.

5. Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon at WrestleMania 10

The blueprint for all subsequent ladder matches. Razor played his part, but let’s be honest; this was the Shawn Michaels show. I don’t think this has aged particularly well due to where the ladder match has gone since, but by 1994 standards this was mind blowing.

4. Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart vs. Owen Hart at WrestleMania 10

The best opening match in WrestleMania history? Quite comfortably. As just a straight wrestling match with no stipulations or interference, this is the best we’ve seen at WrestleMania. Owen beating Bret clean on the night The Hitman wins the title was fantastic booking; it saved us another summer of Lex Luger in main events!

3. Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz at WrestleMania 16

Christian – for some reason – was my guy during the Attitude Era, so E&C’s first tag title victory was always going to make my list. I remember watching this live and being in a state of disbelief. Following the ladder match at No Mercy and the tables match at the Royal Rumble, I had a feeling this would be good, but they blew my expectations away with what was essentially the first TLC match.

2. Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz at WrestleMania 17

I assume the booking of this match went something along the lines of – ‘same as last year, only turned up to 11’. Not only did they top the previous year’s triangle ladder match but they topped the first TLC match at Summerslam. The inclusions of Spike, Lita and Rhyno coupled with E&C operating as full-blown heels put a whole new spin on what could have been perceived as WWE going to the well once too often.

1. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart at WrestleMania 13

Everything about this match was perfect. The submission stipulation was perfect, the involvement of Ken Shamrock was beautifully judged and executed, the action was intense and the outcome was never obvious. All this before we mention the biggest double turn in wrestling history, and one of the most iconic images wrestling has ever produced. What made this match stand out even further was its presence on an otherwise terrible show.

5. Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon at WrestleMania 10

This match was incredible. I remember in the lead up to Mania X there was a lot of speculation on what a ladder match even was, I didn’t have a clue what these two were going to do in the ring. The feud leading in was great with the two Intercontinental belts and both guys put together an unforgettable match bell to bell. It’s probably overblown with hype at this point but there’s no denying it’s a classic.

4. Edge and Christian w/Rhyno vs. The Hardy Boyz w/Lita vs. The Dudley Boyz w/Spike Dudley at WrestleMania 17

This is still the greatest TLC match of all time. The Triangle Ladder match at WM 16 and TLC match at Summerslam 2000 were indeed spectacular but, for my money, this blew them both away and capped off a classic trilogy of ladder stunt shows in style. The three teams were on world-beating form as usual but Lita, Spike and Rhyno deserve credit for this match too as they all added to the quality of the match with their own crazy contributions.

3. Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin WrestleMania 13

WrestleMania 13 was a rotten show but I have to imagine people went home happy after this match. Enough has already been written about it. Stunning stuff.

2. Steve Austin vs. The Rock WrestleMania 17

The biggest WrestleMania main event of my lifetime. I’d never before and never since seen a match with as much hype as this one. The two biggest stars in the world colliding in the top match of the greatest WrestleMania of all time. I still get goosebumps when I hear “My Way” by Limp Bizkit as a result of this one.

1. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart WrestleMania 10

This match blew my mind as a nine-year-old wrestling fan. I was a big Bret Hart fan like everybody else was at the time but, for whatever reason, I sided with Owen in their feud. I came unglued when The Rocket rolled up his big brother at the end of this one, the result made all the sweeter by the fact that it had come at the end of what was the greatest match I’d seen in my entire, short, life at the time. I didn’t think anything could top the Summerslam 92 main event, I was wrong.
