Wrestling with Sin: 144

Brian Damage

This is the 144th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.

Hitting Bull

‘The Raging Bull’ Manny Fernandez and ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan were at a strip joint early in their wrestling careers. After drinking the night away, Duggan got up to go to the bathroom. While in there, he heard a loud commotion outside. When he came out, Manny was in a fist fight with a bouncer and a stripper on the floor unconscious.

Duggan was able to get between Fernandez and the bouncer and took off before the police arrived. As it turned out, a stripper got a little overzealous and decided to jump off the stage and onto Fernandez. Manny didn’t appreciate the stripper jumping on him and he punched her, knocking her out. That is when the bouncer got involved and the fight broke out.

Hart On

Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart wrestled during an era when drugs were running rampant. While Bret experimented with cocaine and he did use steroids during his WWF career, Hart’s preferred drug of choice was sex. Despite being married to wife Julie for over 20 years, he  freely admitted to being a serial Adulterer.

Bret had flings with women all over the world. He once met a couple of female fans in an elevator while wrestling in Japan. After getting his autograph, Bret invited the two women up to his room for a threesome and they obliged. He also carried on an affair for months with a waitress from New Jersey. Julie Hart found out about that affair after seeing all the long distance phone bills.

Julie stayed with Bret even though she was aware of his infidelity. That would wind up biting her as Bret continued having sex with other women. The end of their 20-year marriage came when Bret traveled to Italy for a WWF tour. A woman named Cinzia Rota was a fan of Bret Hart since she was a child. The two met at an autograph session and would have an affair. It eventually led to Bret and Julie getting a divorce and Bret marrying Cinzia.

They too would divorce after only three years of marriage.

The McKay Way

Scottish pro wrestler/trainer/promoter Colin ‘Highlander’ McKay was arrested in 2012 after it was discovered McKay was sending sexually provocative messages to young teenage boys. McKay not only was sending explicit messages to boys as young as 13 years old, he also admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old. McKay was caught after a parent of one of the boys McKay was talking to saw one of his lewd messages.

McKay pled guilty to numerous charges and was sentenced to 3 years and 10 weeks in prison. He also must register as a child sex offender and will not be allowed to work with children after his release. Colin McKay wrestled for over 20 years winning several titles in the U.K. He is also responsible for training current WWE star Noam Dar.

Samoan Silence

In the winter of 1979, Hulk Hogan was driving his car to New York City along with Afa and Sika of the Wild Samoans. While in New Jersey, Hogan got lost and pulled over on the side of the road to look at a map. A New Jersey state trooper pulled behind Hogan’s vehicle and asked for his license and registration. When Hogan reached into his glove compartment for his paperwork, his .22 caliber pistol fell out. Hogan and the Samoans were all handcuffed and held at gunpoint by state troopers.

It turned out that New Jersey law said that an unregistered gun was a mandatory 1-year prison sentence. Hogan pleaded with the troopers that he was new to the area and had no knowledge of the law. He then asked Afa and Sika to back him up but the just stared in silence. After all, this was 1979 and kayfabe was still alive and well in pro wrestling. The Samoans feared if they spoke, it would get back to Vince McMahon Sr. and they would get in trouble seeing as they never spoke on camera during wrestling shows.

So, Hogan was sent to the New Jersey state troopers headquarters to be processed. He was allowed his one phone call and called Vince Sr. who called Gorilla Monsoon who had some connections in the state and got Hogan released. While Hulk didn’t get the mandatory 1 year in the jail sentence, he was given 6 months of probation.

  1. The Manny one is funny AF. not for the poor stripper that got knocked out, but funny nonetheless. I actually feel bad for Hogan on that one though. If Vince Sr and Monsoon hadn’t been able to bail out Hulk, I’m curious how that would’ve affected his career after that. I’d have been damn pissed at the Samoans for that, but what can you do? Fight ’em about it?
