This Week in Wrestling 2017 week 52

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday so time for the latest instalment of ’This Week in Wrestling’. Today, in part 52, the final one of 2017, Brian discusses the US title tournament and shares all the best viral content he’s stumbled upon this week.

Predicting the Predictable

It was announced this past week that Smackdown Live will be holding a tournament to crown a brand new United States champion. Initially, I got excited about the news of a tournament because I felt it would help elevate someone completely new to a championship level. That is until I saw the brackets. With Bobby Roode and Jinder Mahal already winning their first-round matches, I think I can see the writing on the wall.

If the other brackets are any indication, it looks like it will be a Roode vs Mahal final. If that’s the case, I see Jinder Mahal getting the title. How easy to predict was that? That is the point of just some of my frustration with WWE the last few years. They make things seem level and fair and then give us the predictable.

Now there is no guarantee that Jinder Mahal will win the title but it certainly looks that way. A much better option would be Bobby Roode or maybe get really crazy and have Xavier Woods or even Aiden English win it. Alas, WWE is far from being unpredictable and I think that is what kills them. It seems the same people get the opportunities and the pushes.

Jinder Mahal winning the WWE title over the summer was a surprise indeed but it was an obvious flop at the box office. So will giving Jinder the United States title a way to justify his failed monster push? Now I could be completely off base and we will see someone completely different become US champion. I hope and pray that is the case.

The same should be said about the upcoming Royal Rumble. Does anybody think anyone but Roman Reigns will win it? Again, I hope I am wrong but looking at WWE’s track record, they more often times than not go by the book. There have been rare occasions when the company has switched plans midway and gave us shocking surprises. For instance, Batista won the Rumble to thunderous boos…so they added Daniel Bryan into the mix and made him champion.

All because the fans united and became vocal about what they wanted to see and what they didn’t want to see. The same needs to be done here. If not by your voice, then do it by your wallet and not pay to see the same generic outcomes day after day. At least take a page from Triple H and NXT, they seem to have a right formula that works well. Vince McMahon seems satisfied with pushing only who he views as marketable and everyone else is decoration. Sad considering the talent WWE has and all the great things they could do.

How about this for a tag team: James Ellsworth and Gillberg.

This is a pretty cool looking birthday cake…

Here is an old newspaper clipping announcing the birth of a baby boy named James Brian Hellwig, the future Ultimate Warrior.

‘Gentleman’ Jack Gallagher holding the old WWE European title. The belt looks good in his hands.

Impact Wrestling is offering what with the Knockouts if you buy tickets to their TV taping?!?

  1. I 100% agree with on the whole predictability thing. I of course, like you, want Roode to win, but more than likely it’ll probably be Jinder, and while that’s how his push should’ve started instead of being given the WWE title right off the bat, it still seems like way too soon for this too.

That is a pretty sweet Arn Anderson tattoo tho. Wonder if his #1 fan Daniel Tosh has seen that one yet 😉

Big John Studd was in a Jackie Chan movie????? Looks more like an a shoulder shot than a death blow, but still cool to see Studd anyways. RIP Big guy….
