WWE Fastlane 2018 Preview and Predictions

Brian Damage, Earl Marx and Benjamin Trecroci

Tonight the WWE hosts Fastlane 2018, headlined by a six-pack challenge featuring AJ Styles defend the WWE title against John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Baron Corbin, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. Today, the team discuss that match and the rest of the card in the traditional preview and predictions post on the day of a PPV

WWE United States Championship Match: Randy Orton vs. Bobby Roode

Brian: Why oh Why do I have a sickening feeling that Randy Orton will win the title here and feud with Jinder Mahal at Wrestlemania? Bobby Roode deserves the spotlight at Mania…I just dont have confidence in WWE creative that it will do the right thing here.

Winner: Randy Orton

Earl: Soooo….there’s something about Mary…and there’s something about this match. My heart leads to believe this should be a much bigger deal than it is. Alas, we’re here…and Jinder-less (those who know me know how I disappointed I am about this). Don’t expect a barn burner here. I’d love to go with Bobby Roode, but screw it – Randy is Vince’s boy. I wouldn’t move the title off Bobby, but it’s Randy. He unnecessarily won the Rumble last year. Ha!

Winner: (and new United States Champion) Randy Orton

Benjamin: Imagine if someone told you about two years ago that Orton and Roode would feud for the US title? You’d say, oh wow that sounds amazing! But for some reason, I blame Smackdown as a whole this match kinda does nothing for me. Roode is a stud and should be a main event player as the cocky heel he was in NXT. But I digress, assume either Jinder Mahal is inserted in the match or he interferes and costs Orton the win. Which of course will lead to another multiplayer match at WM.

Winner: Roode (via DQ)

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The New Day vs. The Usos

Brian: If these two teams can put on any kind of performance as they have in previous encounters, this should be really good. Granted, it feels a bit rushed and put together at the last minute…but should still be pretty good.

Winners: The Usos

Earl: This match. Hmm. It’s not that I don’t think it’ll be good to great, but…did we run out of teams on SD or are we waiting for something bigger? Time will tell. This year….Dem Uso Boys make ‘Kishi even prouder.

Winner: The Usos

Benjamin: As much as these two have faced off, I could watch and listen to them go at it forever. They both bring the heat to 100! Much like the Orton/Roode tilt I see The Bludgeon Bros interfering and wiping out both teams leading to a triple threat at WM.

Winner: Usos

SmackDown Women’s Championship Match: Ruby Riott vs. Charlotte Flair

Brian: I think this will be a surprisingly good match. Both Flair and Riott are good workers and should deliver. Charlotte is the poster girl for Wrestlemania though, so I see Charlotte going over.

Winner: Charlotte Flair

Earl: Ruby has done a pretty good job as an antagonist in this feud. She seems like a legit threat to Charlotte. As much as it may seem that Char could be in danger, I see her pulling it out. Naitch’s daughter struts to ‘Mania.

Winner: Charlotte Flair

Benjamin: Always liked Ruby, she seems more a likeable face but is doing just fine as a heel. Still not really sure what Charlotte is going to do at WM but maybe this match leads to that. Charlotte will come out on top here but have a feeling this might be the surprise match of the night.

Winner: Charlotte Flair

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Rusev

Brian: This one is a head-scratcher for me to be honest. Rusev is super hot right now despite portraying a heel and Nakamura is being pushed as a top babyface. While I am happy that both are on the card, I am not thrilled with them meeting each other. Rusev’s popularity could kill off Shinsuke Nakamura in this match.

Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura.

Earl: I love and despise this match at the same time. Ha. Love it because Rusev gets a one on one match on a ppv. Despise it because it SCREAMS SD tv match to me. Sorry Ruse – you are here to give Shinsuke momentum on his road to ‘Mania.

Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

Benjamin: Agree with Brian here as this match could backfire on making Nakamura look “strong” and over with crowd with a guy like Rusev. The event is in Columbus, Ohio so maybe Rusev Day isn’t celebrated there. Nak really needs to have a strong showing here because who knows with an impulsive Vince McMahon who might want to insert Cena into a match for star power.

Winner: Nakamura

Carmella and Natalya vs. Becky Lynch and Naomi

Brian: Another match just thrown together at the last minute for whatever reason. Bathroom break match or a match to cool down the crowd is what this is. Could be good, but I don’t think anybody will truly care.

Winners: Becky Lynch and Naomi

Earl: We probably need to keep Carmella in some type of spotlight if she’s going to be cashing in some time soon. Although my gut says the face women should probably win, I’ve been picking a lot of faces for the wins thus far. Going with the heels here.

Winner: Carmella and Natalya

Benjamin: Not really sure why Becky Lynch isn’t in a bigger position right now as she easily could’ve challenged Charlotte for the World Title. Instead, she’s in some thrown together tag match. Assume Carmella is the one that is going to come out of this looking the best just to remind us that she still has the briefcase.

Winner: Carmella and Natalya

Six-Pack Challenge for the WWE Championship: John Cena vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Kevin Owens vs. Baron Corbin vs. AJ Styles

Brian: Way too many people thrown into one match. I think it’ll make things too convoluted and perhaps sloppy and disjointed. There is no way AJ Styles doesn’t win and face Nakamura one on one at Mania.

Winner: AJ Styles

Earl: This should be match of the night. This is high risk/high reward situation. The winner gets to go to Mania on a very triumphant note. The losers…seem destined for the Andre Battle Royal (unless you are John Cena). Who deserves that ‘Mania spot as WWE Champion? Although I would love to see KO vs Sami for the title, I can’t see anyone other than the champ walking out…the champ.

Winner: AJ Styles

Benjamin: Well, here we go with this. This is going to be scary because of the Cena factor. Do they pull the trigger and put the strap on Cena even for a couple weeks just to make people more intrigued? Or does someone else win the title? Really hope AJ Styles shows why he is the face that runs the place and looks like the superstar he is walking into WM as a solidified WWE Champion.

Winner: AJ Styles

Brian: There really is no solid reason for this pay per view. Most of it seems thrown together and no real thought put into it. Smackdown Live has been suffering for so long. This really won’t do anything to help it get back on track.

Earl: Yeah. Vroooooommmmm. Haha. Although I can’t say I have high expectations, I think we have a pretty solid card that could produce some good moments. We’ve been building this DB vs Shane McMahon storyline for some time, so I expect it to play a role in the main event. The tag match will be good as well. Onto to ‘Mania I say.

Benjamin: Much like Elimination Chamber PPV, this seems to be a bridge to WM but hope that it surprisingly delivers like EC did. The Six Pack Challenge really needs to up the ante and not have four dudes laying around in the ring for a third of the match like they did in the EC. This seems like a show I’ll have on the entire but might not watch intently. It’s time to take that exit to New Orleans to Wrestlemaniaaaaaaaa.

  1. Please, do not have the Maharajah-bum be in the main card. Have him be in the pre-show or better yet, not have him there at all because he’s never earned shit to really be taken seriously and why waste a spot on a jobber that never drew a fucking dime when you give a spot to someone on NXT?
