WWE Extreme Rules 2018 Preview and Predictions

Brian Damage, Benjamin Trecroci and Earl Marx

It’s time for the annual stipulation-fest that is Extreme Rules. The dual-branded show has every title on the line. As is the norm, today the team will preview and share their thoughts on the card as well as share their predictions.

WWE Championship match
AJ Styles (c) vs. Rusev

Brian: This should be a decent enough match. I am happy that Rusev is finally getting recognized as being over. The guy has worked hard and does have a natural charisma that comes out great on television. With all that said, AJ Styles I think will retain.

Winner: AJ Styles

Benjamin: It’s too bad that the WWE doesn’t seem too interested in making the World Heavy Championship the main event these days. But anyways it’s nice to see Rusev finally getting a shot at the strap. This has actually been built up quite well. Would be really wild to see Rusev get the win and hold onto the title for a couple weeks. But AJ will likely retain.

Winner: AJ Styles

Earl: I mean, every now and then Vince throws those smarks a bone. This is that match. Rusev Day is a thing, man. It struck like lightning and just took off. Is it enough to stop the AJ train? I just don’t see it. I’d love to see this match close the PPV, but I just don’t see that either.

Winner: AJ Styles

Intercontinental Championship
Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. Seth Rollins (30-Minute Iron Man Match)

Brian: This will most likely be the match of the evening. Dolph and Seth work well off each other and 30 minutes is a good amount of time for them to tell a story…although it should be an hour instead of 30 minutes.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Benjamin: Agree that this match should be an hour as well. Rollins should’ve kept the IC title and been known as the champ since that Brock Lesnar guy is no longer with us. Not real sure where the Ziggler & Drew McIntyre relationship is headed but so far so good. These two will kill with a million flash finishes. McIntyre will probably still find himself involved in the match to keep the title on Ziggy.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Earl: I’m thinking this is a front-runner for Match of the Night. It’s funny – I was just telling someone not too long ago “Does Dolph have that one match?” I mean…that one certified, memorable match? I didn’t think so. This could be it. I didn’t think Seth would lose the IC title, let alone to Ziggler. So, my thinking there must be something going on here.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Raw Women’s Championship
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Nia Jax (Extreme Rules Match)

Brian: Eh, we’ve seen this before. Maybe with “extreme rules” added to the match, it’ll add another layer to this feud.

Winner: Alexa Bliss

Benjamin: Haven’t been too into this whole title picture as it something just seems off since that great cash-in by Bliss. Assume Rousey shows up and causes some type of interference causing Bliss the title and setting up a triple-threat at SummerSlam.

Winner: Nia Jax

Earl: If there is a chance Alexa can cheat to win, I expect her to. I mean – that is what good heels do right? I have somewhat grown tired of the interaction between these two. I just don’t know if I see Nia getting the belt back. Let’s draw this out. We could be looking at Ronda vs Bliss vs Jax at Summerslam (which isn’t a bad thing).

Winner: Alexa Bliss

SmackDown Women’s Championship
Carmella (c) vs. Asuka (James Ellsworth suspended in a shark cage)

Brian: I’m going to say this as simply as I can…Asuka needs to win the title here. I respect that they are trying to build up Carmella as a heel…but Asuka’s character has taken a bit of a hit in recent months and this match could help erase all that.

Winner: Asuka

Benjamin: Like I said it’s time for Asuka to get back on top. Carmella has been fun and all but really don’t see her in a SummerSlam match. Ellsworth will probably end up falling from the cage onto Carmella or something silly.

Winner: Asuka

Earl: Ok. I think Carmella is slowly getting better, but it could be time to move in a different direction. As the old song says, “I’m afraid the masquerade is over”. The reign of Asuka begins now.

Winner: Asuka

Roman Reigns vs. Bobby Lashley

Brian: Ugh, where do I start with this? The feud seemed thrown together, rather than planned out for a long period of time. I just don’t have faith that this will be any good. Lashley needs the win more than Reigns obviously.

Winner: Bobby Lashley

Benjamin: Am I the only one who is actually entertained by this feud? Not saying it’s great but it’s not as bad as people are saying. Roman calling Lashley, “Bob” cracks me up every time. If Lashley wins where does that leave Reigns? This match has the potential to surprise people.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Earl: I am anticipating this is one of the “Big fights” Bob Lashley has come back for. It’s almost amazing at the transformation. In his feud with Sami Zayn AKA Sam Zayn, I thought Lashley was painful to watch. This time around, I don’t think that. I almost think it’s amazing that the man with little to no personality has such a big problem with Roman Reigns. I mean…who doesn’t have a problem with the guy who says he’s the “Big Dawg”? Ha! Thinking…we let this be a fight. Does not have to be a technical masterpiece.

Winner: Roman Reigns

United States Championship
Jeff Hardy (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Brian: I am not expecting a five-star classic here. It should be okay. Shinsuke needs to start winning championships and I think it starts with the US belt.

Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

Benjamin: Reportedly, Jeff Hardy is nursing some injuries and Nakamura is someone who needs a big win. Nakamura will win his first hardware here.

Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

Earl: Is it just me or has Jefferey Nero been looking pretty slow in the ring lately? That could be the sign that Naka’s ship has finally come in. I just…want him gold around his waist. Yes…the man who can’t speak “ing-rish” should be the US champion. Ahhhh yes…it’s old school heel, but it would work.

Winner: (and new champion) Shinsuke Nakamura

SmackDown Tag Team Championship
Bludgeon Brothers (c) vs. Team Hell No

Brian: I really think this a waste of time for Daniel Bryan to be wrestling tag team matches with Team Hell No. It is a nice nostalgia act, I get it, but Bryan should be doing much more as a singles star.

Winners: The Bludgeon Brothers

Benjamin: Never was too into Team Hell No during their original run and while it’s fun it’s not maybe what Daniel Bryan should be doing. Have a feeling that Miz will interfere and that will set up a match between Miz and DB. Really hope they don’t do a Kane vs. Bryan feud. Not real sure why crowds go silent for The Bludgeons because they’ve been great.

Winner: Bludgeon Brothers

Earl: I have made no secret about this – I am not a fan of the BBs. There’s something about their booking that is just odd. It may be tangent, but I fear for teams like BBs and Sanity because the main roster has a bad history of booking guys like this. I think history will repeat itself. As for the match, I don’t expect this run of Team Hell No to go too far. Let’s put over the new guys and see if it sticks.

Winner: Bludgeon Bros.

Raw Tag Team Championship
Deleters of Worlds vs. B-Team

Brian: It really would be cool to see Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas get the tag team titles…alas I don’t think it’ll happen.

Winners: The Deleters of Worlds

Benjamin: Has anyone else notice that Bray and Bo have not touched during this whole feud? Hoping that Bo finally Bo-lieves in his brother and joins the Deleters.

Winner: Deleters of Worlds

Earl: I just want this one to be quick. Sorry. I said it. I just don’t care about the Deleter of World’s underwhelming reign. I do like the B-Team’s theme music though.

Winner: DoWs

Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens (Steel Cage Match)

Brian: Here is another match that seemed thrown together and another feud that I could care less about. Poor Kevin Owens.

Winner: Braun Strowman

Benjamin: How to kill two of your top stars in one swoop? Put one of them in a Port-o-Potty. Awful feud. Make it stop.

Winner: Braun Strowman

Earl: This could be entertaining, but this feud is somewhat odd. I know that, as a face, Braun’s booking has to be “softened” to appeal to the masses, but at times, I am finding it tough to watch. I still believe Braun is the one who has Brock’s number. If we want that to be the case, we have to continue keep him booked strongly.

Winner: Braun Strowman

Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin

Brian: Why even bother with this garbage. Baron Corbin isn’t anywhere close to Balar’s level as a wrestler. There are so many other good matches that could have been booked here.

Winner: Finn Balor

Benjamin: If the WWE wanted people to stop caring about Finn Balor, mission accomplished. I actually like Corbin but right now these two are fighting over anything. Corbin will probably win because every time Finn is about to move up he takes a step back.

Winner: Baron Corbin

Earl: I mean, Finn has to be on the card, right?

Winner: Finn Balor

New Day vs. SAnitY (Tables Match)

Brian: This match will actually probably be pretty good. Let’s hope the WWE gives them enough time to do a good match.

Winners: SAnitY

Benjamin: Apparently this is on Pre-show. Come on! This has potential to be match of the night. Sanity has looked strong so far, but sadly they haven’t picked up a solid W. This should be wild. Sanity needs to win and look cool doing it.

Winners: SAnitY

Earl: This could be a hot firestarter for the crowd. If we want to get some steam behind Sanity, it wouldn’t be wise for them to lose. New Day to do the favors here. They won’t be hurt by the loss.

Winners: SAnitY

Overall Thoughts:

Brian: I gotta be honest, I haven’t watched a full episode of RAW in the last few weeks and I feel like I haven’t missed much. I am not a fan of the “Extreme Rules” pay per view concept. I am just hoping for a decent show. I have my doubts though.

Benjamin: Not a huge fan of the Extreme Rules PPV because why does it have to be a special show to be “extreme?” This should be pretty good, but they could’ve chopped off about four/five matches and made it into a really strong show. I’ll be watching live but probably more of a tune in and out type show.

Earl: I just don’t know on this one. Maybe I just have too much going on personally. This one is a fairly interesting mix of matches. As opposed to thinking the worst, I’m going to give them a chance to impress me. Make no mistakes about it – it has the potential to drag in some areas for sure.

  1. Three things:

1.You guys left out your predictions for Andrade Cien Almas vs. Sin Cara, which is the other pre-show match.

2.I want Becky Lynch to pop up on the pre-show panel and issue a challenge to both Carmella and Asuka for the SmackDown Women’s Title sometime down the road.

3.If the B-Team DO win the Raw Tag-Team Titles, they will be shortly dropping them to the Authors of Pain (who could desperately do with a new manager since Mr. DotCom is too old to travel with them).

    • I’m down for Becky getting a push like that, yeah. I don’t see the B-Team winning, but who knows. Otherwise, they should’ve already been building up the AoP this whole time to challenge for the tag belts. THEY’RE the ones who should be beating Matt and Bray.

If only Heyman was available and willing to be paired with them, that’d help them out tremendously.

  2. My picks:

-AJ Styles (But I wouldn’t be against a brief Rusev Day reign)
    -Team Hell No
-Ziggler (Due to shenanigans from McEntyre)
    -Carmella (Poor Asuka)
-Reigns (I prefer Lashley but Vince)
    -Deleters of Worlds
-SAnity (they need the win more)
