This is the 177th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.
LaFon and Games
In the Autumn of 1997, former WWF and ECW wrestler Phil LaFon was allegedly having an affair with an unnamed woman. The woman’s “other” man followed LaFon and the woman to Lafon’s home. The man started banging on the door and LaFon answered the door and pointed his gun at the man who was also carrying a gun. LaFon allegedly forced the man to his knees and placed his gun in the man’s mouth to scare him.
The woman reportedly grabbed a knife from the kitchen and tried to stab the man who was kneeling down. Lafon grabbed the woman and prevented her from trying to kill the other man. The man got up and attacked LaFon while he was struggling with the woman. During the melee, the woman fired a shot from LaFon’s gun and police were called from concerned neighbors.
When police arrived, all three individuals were arrested at the scene. Phil LaFon was charged with assault with intent to do bodily harm and the woman was arrested for firing a gun within the city limits of Calgary.
Heat Home Alabama
A tag team match in Florence, Alabama saw babyfaces Guy Mitchell and Happy Humphrey face off against heels Pedro Zapata and Mario Galento back in 1962. As the heels were getting the upper hand in the match, a fan rushed the ring and stabbed Pedro Zapata nine times in the back, shoulder and forearm. Zapata was able to strike the fan and throw him against the ropes but collapsed due to his injuries. Zapata was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was in critical condition for several days.
The attacker was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Thankfully, Zapata recovered from his wounds and would resume wrestling until his retirement in 1981.
Turning the Paige of a Brad Situation
In the Spring of 2017, a huge leak of explicit photos and videos involving WWE star Paige along with her then-boyfriend former WWE wrestler Brad Maddox. Several of the photos and videos showed Paige completely nude, playing with sex toys and having sex with Maddox. One of the videos showed Paige having sex with ‘The New Day’s’ Xavier Woods while boyfriend Brad Maddox watched and filmed it.
Paige revealed in late 2017, that the scandal put her in a deep depression. She went into hiding in her native England, became anorexic, her hair started to fall out and contemplated suicide.
Reality Kickin’ In
Kevin Von Erich revealed that the first time he was ever scheduled to face Japanese wrestler ‘The Great Kabuki’ was in World Class Championship Wrestling in the early 1980’s. Backstage, Von Erich looked at Kabuki and saw an out of shape, middle age man and was not impressed. Kevin Von Erich then complained to his father that Kabuki was in no shape to face him in a wrestling match.
After being convinced that Kabuki could hold his own in the ring, Von Erich agreed to wrestle him. During the match, Kabuki turned his back to Von Erich in perhaps a sign of disrespect. Kevin, who was agitated, tried to blindside Kabuki with a stiff punch. Instead, Kabuki spun around quickly and kicked Von Erich in the face with his own stiff shot. The kick broke Kevin’s cheekbone and nose. Von Erich said that instead of getting angry with Kabuki, he found a new respect for his opponent.
Sometime in 1991, ‘Bam Bam’ Bigelow was in an airport traveling with his wife. The two got into a heated argument and started making a scene. Airport security was summoned to try and diffuse the situation. All it did, however, was infuriate Bigelow who felt that the airport security was overstepping their bounds.
Bigelow allegedly wound up in a physical altercation with a couple of the security guards and was subsequently arrested. Bam Bam Bigelow would be released the next day and plead not guilty to assault charges.
