Book or Cook? The Booking of Chad Gable

Brian Damage, Craig Wilson, Benjamin Trecroci and Jamie Lithgow

The WWE roster is filled with “superstars” at every level. There are the main roster guys who regularly appear on Raw and SmackDown, those who are used as glorified jobbers and those who are barely used at all. In this series of pieces, we will take an individual wrestler barely used and decide if they are worth keeping or should they be let go. Today we decide if we Book or Cook Chad Bable.

Brian: Chad Gable is a very talented wrestler. With that said though, he does seem to lack a bit of charisma. That is a must in the universe that is the WWE. Gable has been off of Raw television for what seems like a couple of months. Is it a question of there is nothing for him creatively or there is an injury we are not aware of?

Right now, it appears that creatively there is nothing for him. That is sad, considering his overall talent. He is a great mat wrestler obviously with his amateur background and can fly in the ring if needed. Would Gable be better off someplace else or could he still be salvaged in WWE?

Craig: Ah, Chad Gable, the real victim in the Kurt Angle illegitimate son angle. From one-half of an over NXT tag team that made it to the main roster with high hopes and expectations to a guy lost in the shuffle.

As Brian alludes to, Gable is hugely talented in the ring but does severely lack anything in the way of charisma. I do, however, like him but I do wonder if he’s so far lost in the shuffle, and so many superstars have overtaken him, that he can’t be salvaged. I know that for every Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart there’s a Marty Jannetty and Jim Neidhart but the team of American Alpha didn’t even get far enough along for us to come to the point of working out who was who.

Can he be saved?

Benjamin: Chad Gable what to do, what to do? After seeing him on Raw this Monday I’m afraid that as much I’d like to book him. He might be cooked.

Gable seems to be in the Tyler Breeze camp. Very talented, but “creative has nothing for him” and that’s a shame.
When Gable was on Smackdown, he put on some clinics, including a great match against AJ Styles. So it’s not like he’s not talented.

Hoping once Jason Jordan returns maybe they can put them two back together. But we know tag teams aren’t very high on WWE’s radar.

There’s just too many top guys on Raw for someone like Gable to break the ceiling with the way things are set up for him.

So, unfortunately, it’s a COOKED by creative.

Brian: It’s a COOK for me also, unfortunately. Nowadays Gable is seen as an extra instead of an actual talent. A place like New Japan, Ring of Honor or Impact Wrestling would be lucky to have him and I guarantee you that he would thrive.

Craig: I totally, the phrase ‘creative has nothing for you’ so clearly applies to Gable here and, on many levels, that’s a sin. He’s a very good worker but it’s also abundantly clear that he’s not fancied by the powers that be and that’s his main downfall.

  1. Chad Gable is a very very talented wrestler and I feel like he might be one of the best out there that we just don’t know yet. He should go to NJPW, ROH or new Impact ASAP. WWE has been awful since Mania and I can’t see them surprisingly us with some great television all of a sudden and having anything interesting with Chad Gable coming up.

I also think he has charisma he just lacks some mic skills. That being said…there are tons of other guys who are also terrible on the mic that are worse workers and being pushed. This isn’t Chad Gables fault. I honestly think that he has a strong future ahead of him in Japan if he goes there. I could see the guy putting out some classic matches.

    • You nailed all the main points with this. He’s as gifted athlete as any, possibly even being the next Kurt Angle-ish if booked right. But he hasn’t, and that’s why he’s where he is now in the pecking order. A move to the NJPW or ROH to work on his character would do him a world of good.

  2. I like Chad Gable and he is a great wrestler as I agree with whyswaldo on what Gable should do. That stupid Kurt Angle illegitimate son storyline killed his career as it did him nor Jason Jordan any favors. A move to the indies and ROH I think would help him find a character and gain a personality. He would be useful there and maybe find some ideas of worth for himself.
