This Week in Wrestling 2018 Week 31

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday so time for the latest installment of ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 31st of 2018. Today,Brian discusses Brock Lesnar’s new gimmick and shares all the best viral content he’s stumbled upon this week.

The Beast is Back…Well Not Exactly

So, ‘The Beast’ Brock Lesnar finally returned to Monday Night Raw and what we got wasn’t exactly what was expected of him. In years past, WWE fans were used to seeing Brock Lesnar come out to a thunderous ovation and have Paul Heyman be his mouthpiece. This week, instead of that, we saw Brock act like a prima donna and refusing to go to the ring. When he finally did, he assaulted his own “advocate” in Paul Heyman. I get why they are going in this direction with Lesnar. He has been mostly an absentee champion for well over a year now.

They are trying to reverse the trend of Lesnar being the cool heel and Roman Reigns being the hated babyface. It seems to have worked, because fans in Miami, Florida were actually cheering “we want Roman” when Lesnar was out in the ring. Perhaps the majority of fans are just sick and tired of Lesnar as a part time champion. Maybe, the WWE finally booked this feud right and made Roman look like a guy that may not be everyone’s favorite cup of tea…but at least is a better option as Universal champion than Brock Lesnar.

On the flip side to all of this, with Brock being booked as a spoiled rotten champion…it is hard to believe that this was the same guy that the Undertaker lost his infamous undefeated streak to. At that period of time, Brock was still part time, but was booked as an unstoppable, unbeatable suplex machine. I guess sacrifices had to be made to finally get Roman in a place where fans could feel comfortable rooting for him. Now, it all remains to be seen if this line of booking will hold up. New York is a very finicky crowd. They just might boo the hell out of Roman and cheer loudly for Brock. We will see for sure at SummerSlam.

The most interesting part of that angle from Monday was Brock telling Paul they were not friends and grabbed Heyman by his face in anger. Does this mean that the Brock/Heyman marriage is dissolved or is it just a ruse? Can something more significant come out of that angle like Paul aligning with another wrestler? Roman Reigns maybe? While we have seen this feud go on and on for some time now, this question mark might spark some interest in the dullness of it. Maybe then again maybe not.

I have to give credit, where credit is due and say that former WCW champion David Arquette really does have a passion for the wrestling business and that should be respected and admired. Here he is still going after it.
