This is the 183rd installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.
Ignorance is Bliss
It is not uncommon for pro wrestlers to have they fair share of overzealous fans. We have documented some of the lengths that some of these “fans” or better yet stalkers will go to impress the subject of their admiration. Now with the emergence of social media, many of these people will do their creepy stuff online. Several WWE superstars have been victims of these cyber-stalkers.
Case in point, Dolph Ziggler had a female fan create numerous Twitter accounts to stalk and harass Ziggler with nude photos of herself. She also attempted to besmirch the name of WWE star Dana Brooke because she felt she was dating Dolph and was a threat to her “relationship” with DZ. Celeste Bonin formerly ‘Kaitlyn’ in WWE had a male stalker who went above and beyond creepy. Not only would he continuously tweet to her nonsensical stuff. He also went as far as to take a dump in a toilet bowl and repeatedly tweet the contents to her.
That brings us to current WWE star Alexa Bliss. Alexa has had her share of fans and stalkers, but one in particular took his fandom to a whole new level. The stalker/creeper actually cut himself and carved her name into his arm and tweeted it to her. Obviously, all of these acts are cause for concern but this one seemed a little too gruesome. The “fan” in question has since had his Twitter account suspended.
In 1989, the Samoan Swat Team of Samu and Fatu entered World Championship Wrestling. The tag team was pushed as monster heels and basically “no sold” every move that every other wrestler threw at them. That didn’t go over too well with the rest of the WCW locker room and some wrestlers told the SST to start taking bumps and start selling their moves. Fatu was more than willingly to sell more, but apparently Samu was much more stubborn. Because of this, many in WCW wanted to send a message to Samu.
A match was booked pitting the Samoan Swat Team against a couple of jobbers in what appeared to be a squash match. The thing was, one of those so called jobbers was Brad Rheingans. Rheingans was a former amateur wrestler who competed in two Olympics and was also trained by Verne Gagne. He was a ringer who was booked to go into the match and stretch out Samu with painful wrestling holds. The entire match Rheingans put Samu in several holds that Samu legitimately couldn’t break away from. Samu was apparently taught a valuable and painful lesson that night.
Going Down South
Antonio Pena was the owner and founder of AAA wrestling in Mexico. He was considered by many the man who helped popularize the lucha libre style of wrestling in the United States. In the late 1990’s, a number of his most popular luchadors jumped ship from AAA to Promo Azteca and WCW.
After leaving AAA, several of those wrestlers (Konnan, Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera etc.)came out to the media accusing Antonio Pena of being a homosexual. While that on the surface doesn’t seem like a big deal, those same luchadors claimed that Pena would offer pushes and main event slots to wrestlers who would sleep with him. Pena would deny the allegations and sue the luchadors in question. Antonio Pena passed away in 2006 due to a heart attack. He was 55 years old.
Don’t Be Cruel
Back in 1987, the Midnight Rockers and the Nasty Boys were involved in a big feud in Memphis, Tennessee. The teams outside of the ring became friends and were all drinking buddies. Marty Jannetty recalled a night that the two teams went out and partied. During the night they got really drunk and decided to make a trip to Graceland.
Graceland was the home of the iconic singer Elvis Presley who died just 10 years earlier. It was the middle of the night…so Graceland wasn’t open to the public. That, however, didn’t stop the Midnight Rockers and the Nasty Boys from sneaking into the estate. Jannetty claims the four of them continued to drink at Elvis’ grave site. He then alleges that before leaving, Sags of the Nasty Boys dropped his pants and urinated on Elvis’ grave.
