This is the 238th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.
During a Stampede Wrestling show in Canada in 1989, a bunch of the wrestlers were nearly two hours late. The booker at the time, Bruce Hart, had to wrestle for nearly 90 minutes to stall for time until those wrestlers finally showed up. Exhausted and angry, Bruce went to the dressing room to find out why those wrestlers were late. He was greeted with a sucker punch from the Dynamite Kid.
The punch broke Bruce’s jaw, but it didn’t end there as Dynamite’s partner, Davey Boy Smith, grabbed Bruce and headbutted him….busting Hart’s lip open. It took Bruce’s brother Dean to separate the British Bulldogs from beating Bruce even further. According to Bruce, the Bulldogs were visibly drunk and angry. What caused the seemingly unprovoked attack?
Apparently, Bruce had made remarks to some of the wrestlers how he thought it was funny how the British Bulldogs were once flying first class for the WWF and were now traveling in a van with 20 other wrestlers to shows all over Canada. Somebody went back and told the Bulldogs about Bruce’s comments and Dynamite and Davey Boy became enraged. Bruce had to have his jaw wired shut and couldn’t give a Best Man speech at his brother Owen’s wedding a few weeks later.
The Doctor is Out
While the WWF was hosting a show in Lake Placid, New York…the WWF doctor came around to give all the wrestlers physicals before they could work. The doctor allegedly walked into a room where Miss Elizabeth was changing. Elizabeth apparently started to scream and that alerted her husband Randy Savage.
The Macho Man rushed into the room and immediately threw the doctor against the wall and slapped him across the face. He then physically threw the doctor out of the room and slammed the door behind him.
Bob Sallee was a very popular referee for the Arizona territory back in the 1970’s. After the territory shut down, Sallee apparently became depressed. One night, there was a party in his apartment complex. Sallee was laughing, dancing and partying all night. He then excused himself from the party, went to his own apartment in that complex. A few minutes later, the sound of a gun shot rang out.
Bob Sallee was found dead with a single gun shot wound to his head and a gun in his hand. The police determined there was no foul play involved and Sallee had committed suicide. There was no note left behind.
Hardy Har Har
The scene was the 2008 Armageddon pay per view for WWE. Jeff Hardy was scheduled to win his first WWE title on that night. During the show, however, Hardy was nowhere to be found. After a brief search, WWE creative writer Freddie Prinze Jr., found Hardy completely drugged out in the boiler room of the arena.
Jeff was scheduled to start taping a promo for his big match. Unfortunately, he was in no condition to do so. Luckily, Prinze was able to sober Hardy up enough…to tape a cryptic promo in the dark boiler room potentially averting disaster. Jeff Hardy did wrstle that night and won the WWE title, but in reality, did so drugged up.
