This Week in Wrestling 2019 Week 33

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 33rd of 2019. Today Brian discusses the return of the King of the Ring tournament and the potential this event could have and shares all the best wrestling content from this week.

A Royal Return!

This past week, it was announced that the much beloved ‘King of the Ring’ tournament is returning to the WWE. It has been four long years since the last tournament was held in 2015. While I am not sure why the WWE waited so long for its return, many fans are certainly happy it is back.

The King of the Ring tournament traditionally is supposed to launch an individual wrestler’s career to a whole new level. A wrestler who was once a mid carder, is then elevated to main event status. Sometimes it works, as in the case of ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, Triple H and Brock Lesnar. While other times it flops, case in point Mabel or Billy Gunn. Truth be told though, the successes far outweigh the failures.

With the WWE struggling in recent months creatively, this is a perfect time to reintroduce a fan favorite event like the King of the Ring. It can potentially elevate a new wrestler to a another level. That is, if WWE plays their cards correctly. Despite the fact that WWE has a plethora of great talent, there really aren’t that many true superstars in the company. Now with this tournament in place next week, can WWE hit a home run?

The potential is there to showcase some phenomenal workers. Names like Cedric Alexander, Ali, Chad Gable, Buddy Murphy and Apollo Crews can have the spotlight shined on them brightly. It could also potentially help someone like Drew McIntyre, Samoa Joe or Cesaro finally get over the hump and become main event stars they deserve to be. It could also be won by someone like Baron Corbin or the Miz which could really hurt the company moving forward.

Nothing against the Miz or Corbin, I actually think those two play great heel characters (even though Miz is currently a babyface) but they are not what the WWE needs as King of the Ring. They need a fresh, young face to wear the crown. Somebody the fans wouldn’t expect and take notice of. A King Corbin or King Miz wouldn’t do the trick for me personally. Give it to somebody new, that perhaps really needs that spark to get pushed hard.

The King of the Ring was always a special event that was sort of like the way Money in the Bank is treated today. The fact that it hasn’t been done in the last four years, makes this tournament even more special. Let’s just hope WWE can deliver. If Paul Heyman really is calling the shots creatively on Raw….there may be hope yet. If Vince McMahon decides to change plans at a second’s notice…this may seriously alter the WWE in the future.

Here’s hoping the crown goes to a worthy competitor and WWE doesn’t screw things up…royally.

  1. I can’t believe no one here is talking about the biggest story of the week. In fact, it’s probably the biggest heel turn since Hogan in 1996 at Bash at the Beach. KENTA turning heel and joining the Bullet Club and inspiring the fury of Kastuyori Shibata who gets physical for the first time in 2 years only to be beaten by the Bullet Club and KENTA sitting on him Indian style as a major act of disrespect.
