It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 39th of 2019. Today Brian discusses the end of an era, as WWE ends the 26 year streak of Monday Night Raw being the “A Show.”. He also shares all the best wrestling content from this week.
WWE is No Longer Raw
With WWE signing that billion dollar television deal with FOX last year, we all knew it was just a matter of time before things changed. While Vince McMahon will probably never come out and publicly admit it…Monday Night Raw is no longer WWE’s flagship show. That distinction now belongs to Smackdown on the FOX networks on Friday nights. Thus, it ends Raw’s 26 year streak as being the company’s “A show.”
It makes sense, while Raw airs on the widely available USA network cable channel, Smackdown will air on the even more available FOX network. Nowadays, people just assume that everybody has cable television, that simply is not the case. There are still millions who either cut cable out of their budget or simply can’t afford it. More eyes may very well be on Smackdown than Raw now that the move is set to take place.
The other sign that Smackdown has replaced Raw as the top show was the announcement that the broadcast teams for each brand will change. Love him or hate him, Michael Cole is the lead voice of the company. He along with Corey Graves are moving to Smackdown exclusively, while the very talented, but not as known Vic Joseph takes over as the voice of Raw. He will be joined by Jerry Lawler and the other rather unknown Dio Maddin on color commentary.
Smackdown will bring in big names and stars to attract casual viewers to it. They already have the big title match for Smackdown’s FOX debut between Brock Lesnar against the champ Kofi Kingston. The Hall of Famer Sting will appear on that show as well and don’t be surprised to see more Hollywood stars and big wrestling names show up for the blue brand moving forward. The upcoming draft will be a nice indicator of the changing of the television guard.
I see the “bigger” names like Roman Reigns, the New Day and Brock Lesnar staying on Smackdown while “lesser” names go to Raw. This change will also put the WWE title back on the front burner. For a few years, the WWE Universal title was being showcased as the main title with the WWE title secondary. Hence, why more than likely Brock will win back the WWE title next Friday. Now, this doesn’t mean Monday Night Raw will be a throw away show, far from it.
I do see Raw now becoming the place where newer stars get their opportunities to prove themselves and perhaps become bigger names themselves. Especially if Paul Heyman is still in creative and allowed to book properly without McMahon interference. All in all, this is indeed an end of an era.
