It was the Best of Times, It was the Worst of Times: 2019’s Year in Review
Many fans will say that 2019 was a big resurgent year in professional wrestling. Why not? I mean, WWE started new billion dollar television deals with both USA and FOX networks. Anthem Sports, whic own Impact Wrestling….bought AXS TV which were already airing New Japan and Women of Wrestling on that channel. Major League Wrestling continued to thrive on the Bein Sports Network.
The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) was resurrected by Billy Corgan on Youtube. WWE’s developmental brand NXT was moved to the USA network where more eyes could view it. Last but certainly not least….All Elite Wrestling began their run on TNT and a Wednesday Night War between AEW and NXT began. All of this is very good news for the health of pro wrestling. It still is in demand by network executives who want to build their respective networks.
More wrestlers are getting opportunities and bigger pay days. With all that good news, what could possibly be wrong with the state of the industry? The truth is, ratings have been way down for wrestling related shows like Monday Night Raw. Smackdown’s ratings haven’t been the greatest either. AEW, which is the hot new promotion, has seemingly cooled off in recent weeks. Attendance has been poor for AEW TV shows which is live only once a week.
WWE’s Raw and Smackdown have been struggling creatively for a long while now. Ring of Honor has also suffered both creatively and financially with many arenas half full. It also suffered a great deal of controversy with many wrestlers being grossly underpaid. The viewership numbers on Youtube for the NWA has gone down ever since Jim Cormette was fired/let go/resigned from the show.
Overall, 2019 has been a very odd year in more ways than one. On the surface, it seems like it is booming and in the other, it appears that business has bottomed out. Is pro wrestling slowly dying or has it just completely hit its ceiling? Here’s hoping for a more leveled year in 2020. Happy New Year to all!
