It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 9th of 2020. Today Brian discusses the possible likelihood of ending the WWE network and shares all the best wrestling content from this week.
Pulling The Plug on the WWE Network?
Recently, the WWE Network celebrated its 6 year anniversary since it launched back in 2014. I remember when it debuted and fans were split on the idea of a streaming service for wrestling content. Some loved the idea, while others thought it was too risky. Others were disappointed that it wasn’t an actual cable channel like USA or TNT networks.
Regardless, WWE network launched and in many ways…pioneered the way wrestling fans get their pro wrestling. Since the creation of the network, other wrestling promotions have followed suit and mimicked WWE’s model. Promotions like Impact and New Japan have since rolled out their own streaming services.
For just $9.99, the WWE Network offered a ton of content…both old and new. It has offered classic shows like Primetime Wrestling, Tuesday Night Titans and every single Monday Nitro. It also gave us NXT programming and exclusive content such as documentaries. The main attraction to subscribing, however, was the idea of obtaining every single WWE pay per view for just the price of the network.
No longer were fans expected to dish out 60 bucks to watch a Royal Rumble or Wrestlemania. Fans could get them for less than 10 dollars. Who could really complain about that? The pay per views alone made the network worth the investment.
In recent weeks, there have been rumblings that WWE officials have been in talks with companies like Amazon and Disney. It fueled speculation that maybe Vince McMahon was considering selling his beloved company. The rumors now have it that McMahon is looking to sell his pay per views over to another streaming service like ESPN Plus or Amazon Prime. It is believed that WWE pay view rights are worth in excess of 100 million dollars.
Now as a businessman, selling his pay per views to another service makes some sense. As a customer, however, it makes zero sense and if this rumor turns out to be true….it just might be time to cancel the WWE network. Their biggest selling point was offering pay per views and if taken away….most fans I believe feel that keeping it isn’t worth it. So how many readers subscribe to the network? Will you keep it if these rumors are true?
