This is the 278th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.
In early July of 2018, wrestler Brian Christopher was arrested for DUI and evading police in Tennessee. This unfortunately, was in a long line of legal troubles the former ‘Grand Master Sexay’ had encountered in his lifetime. While being held in a local jail, Brian Christopher was found hanging in his cell. Shoelaces were apparently what were used to hang himself according to reports.
Brian was rushed to a local hospital in the Memphis area was he was pronounced brain dead. His father…WWE Hall of Famer Jerry ‘The Kind’ Lawler made the decision to take his son off life support. His death was ruled a suicide, but Lawler isn’t satisfied with that finding and launched an investigation into the matter. The King said he spoke to four different inmates who said that Brian had a physical confrontation with another inmate before he was found hanging.
Lawler filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the jail and the sheriff in charge. Jerry Lawler said that the sheriff personally promised Jerry that he would “look after” his son while he was incarcerated. Brian Christopher Lawler was 46 years old at the time of his death.
Killer Almost Gets Killed
In 1957, while wrestling in Texas….’Killer’ Joe Christie was making his back to the locker room when a fan stabbed him with a hunting knife in his hip. A police officer grabbed Christie and rushed him backstage. The fan was detained by other wrestlers and fans and was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Christie was rushed to a nearby hospital where his hip was drained and stitched up and sent home.
To kill the pain, Christie stopped at a liquor store and purchased a couple of bottles of booze. When it was time to appear in court to face his attacker, the judge fined the fan 25 dollars for the aggravated assault and court costs. Finding the ruling absurd, Killer Joe Christie cursed at the judge and was found in contempt and fined 50 dollars.
Ramona Isabell was a female African American Wrestler who competed for several territories and wrestled in various other countries around the world from the early 1960’s to the late 1970’s. She along with a handful of other women of color broke barriers in professional wrestling. Despite her success inside the ring, Isabell often faced bigotry outside of it. She once was on a tour of Australia in the 1960’s and went into a store to shop.
The shopkeeper refused to serve her because of the color of her skin. Isabell was also instructed not to touch any of the merchandise, as she would soil it. The shopkeeper told Isabell that no store in Australia would serve her or her kind. The wrestler went into a deep depression having to encounter such hatred and racism.
Japanese independent wrestler Joji Otani (no relation whatsoever to wrestler Shinjiro Otani) was arrested in November of 2019. Otani was spotted by police officials walking and holding hands with a minor. When police questioned Otani, he allegedly admitted to having a relationship with the 16 year old female. Believe it or not, the age of consent in certain parts of Japan is 13.
While that may be the case, there are other areas in Japan that have stricter laws on the legal age of consent. Joji Otani was 28 years old at the time of his arrest. Otani was released from custody and was planning on addressing his arrest at an indie show. No word if that ever occurred.
