Downed On The Farm: Top WWE Developmental Prospects That Never Made It…Part 10

Brian Damage

The WWF/WWE has had some type of developmental system for years now. Whether it was the USWA, Ohio Valley, Power Pro, Heartland, Deep South, Florida Championship Wrestling or NXT…many of the company’s top superstars got their start in at least one of them. While some developmental names like John Cena, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, The Miz, Brock Lesnar and Charlotte Flair all made big stars of themselves by first training in developmental, others never got to see the light of day. This series will focus on those wrestlers…the ones that at some point were a lock to get called up to the main roster and never quite made it. What once was hot, suddenly became a “not” as a WWE superstar.

Seth Skyfire

Steve Adkins started out his career in 1997 wrestling under the moniker of ‘Seth Skyfire’ in the southern independents. In 2005, Skyfire was signed to a WWE developmental deal and was assigned to its top developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). Seth would continue his training under ‘Nightmare’ Danny Davis and Al Snow. Skyfire stood 5 ft 10 in tall and weighed around 200 pounds. While not the ideal wrestler the WWE sought after during that time period….Skyfire’s OVW career took off once Paul Heyman was put in charge of the territory.

Skyfire would go on to win several titles including the OVW television title twice and the co holder OVW Southern tag team titles on four occasions. In 2006, he simultaneously held the OVW TV and OVW tag team titles with CM Punk…who was also the OVW heavyweight champion. The team would eventually split up and see Skyfire feud with Punk over the OVW heavyweight title. Seth donned a mask and wrestled as a luchador for a brief period under the moniker of El Aero Fuego.

Once Heyman was removed from OVW developmental…Skyfire seemed to get lost in the shuffle. He along with several other developmental wrestlers were ultimately released in 2007. Seth would return to wrestling on the independent circuit and even made a brief stop at Ring of Honor. Skyfire would retire as a full time wrestler in 2008.

Ever since his retirement, Steve Adkins returned to school and became a writer, director working on several projects including Hollywood Paranormal Detective and did work on the Disney series The Madalorian. Adkins is married with a child.
