It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 7th of 2021. Today Brian talks about AEW and the opening of the so called “Forbidden Door” and shares all the best wrestling content from this week.
Is the “Forbidden Door” Really Open?
There has been a lot of talk in the wrestling world about Tony Khan and All Elite Wrestling opening up the so called “Forbidden Door” with a working agreement with New Japan Pro Wrestling. Something many thought would never happen considering how the Elite jumped ship from New Japan to form AEW. There was some bad blood between the two promotions once that occurred. It also opened up to allow AEW to work with other promotions like Impact and the NWA.
While it is great to see different promotions working together to create unique match ups and introduce an assortment of new faces that may have otherwise been ignored…is the Forbidden Door really open? There were reports that one of New Japan’s biggest stars ‘The Rainmaker’ Kazuchicka Okada would be coming to the United States to appear on shows like AEW Dynamite and Impact Wrestling. Rumors that have since been shot down by Bullet Club member Tama Tonga who called AEW the minor leagues and the rumors were bullshit.
Who are we to believe? Dave Meltzer who says Okada will be coming or Tonga who said it won’t happen? On the flip side, it was also reported that Sammy Guevara turned down an appearance with Impact because he didn’t like the creative direction of the angle. While AEW supports Guevara for his decision, there are rumblings that Impact management was not happy. There has also been fans of NWA who have been complaining on social media that Riho defeated the NWA women’s champion Serena Deeb in the first round of AEW’s title Eliminator tournament.
Are there cracks already in this multi-partnership of promotions? To be honest, if there are I wouldn’t be shocked. Pro wrestling has a long history of promotions and territories working together…only to see the different promoters stab each other in the back. I am not saying this will be the case with AEW, Impact, NWA and New Japan…but I certainly wouldn’t rule it out either. My hope is that everybody plays nice and that hopefully some bridges can be mended between the different personalities. Something special could happen if done right.
Cody Rhodes has gone as far as to say AEW is willing to work with WWE. That is something I do not see ever happening, despite Triple H stating that the company is open to work with different promotions if there was a benefit for WWE. The reality is, WWE is the true forbidden door. WWE had had some working agreements in the past….they have worked with AAA, New Japan, All Japan and ECW…but never will we see WWE and AEW work side by side. Vince McMahon is too protective over his brand to allow say Kenny Omega to beat Roman Reigns in a match. So while WWE is the real Forbidden Door, I just hope AEW and the other companies working together can and will continue to do so.
