Wrestling With Sin: 328

Brian Damage

This is the 328th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.

Auld Lang Sigh

‘Gentleman’ Jack Gallagher was apparently far from being a gentleman on New Year’s Eve of 2014. A woman accused Gallagher of sexual assault on that night. According to the victim, she attended a New Year’s Eve party that the wrestler was also at. She says later in the evening, she went to the bathroom. It was at that time, that Gallagher allegedly opened the bathroom door. She claimed that Gallagher began grabbing her skirt and pulled on it so hard, that it ripped.

The woman was able to push Gallagher away and was able to get out of the bathroom. She said that she then immediately left the party and went home. Gallagher would issue a statement on these accusations by saying:

“In 2014, at a New Year’s Eve party, I met a young woman and my behaviour towards her was inappropriate. As this party was nearly six years ago and I had drunk quite a larger amount of alcohol that night, unfortunately, I do not recollect what happened. I wish to make it clear that drinking is not an excuse for my behaviour that night. I want to express my deepest regrets, and I am genuinely sorry for the upset that I have caused.

“Following these allegation, I proactively contacted the Head of WWE Talent Relations to take responsibility for my actions, as I was aware that the woman who made the allegations and I had both attended the same New Year’s Eve party. I was then informed that this would be a breach of the company ethics policy, and this is what led to my release form my contract with the WWE.”

Jack Gallagher was released from his WWE contract in June of 2020.

The 400 Pound Gorilla in the Room

Former WWF referee Joey Marella was reportedly fired from the company in July of 1993. According to Dave Meltzer, Marella had failed a random drug test and was let go. It was the first time a referee was fired by the company over drug use. His firing was soon changed to a suspension, when it was believed his father and WWE Hall of Famer Gorilla Monsoon intervened. Marella was ultimately brought back to the company with a warning.

Sadly, Marella died a year later in July of 1994 after being involved in a tragic car accident as chronicled here.

Crackdown

Reggie B. Fine was legitimately a former pimp who turned professional wrestler. Fine worked out of a strip club and pimped some of the dancers. He wrestled for several territories, but was most known for his run in Memphis, Tennessee. Fine was once the USWA heavyweight champion after defeating Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler.

During his wrestling career, Fine would supplement his income by selling crack cocaine to other wrestlers he was working with. In one incident, an unnamed wrestler owed Reggie money for drugs. When Fine went to the locker room to collect…he discovered that the unidentified wrestler took off after his match and left without paying what he owed. Fine was so upset, he took off his hat and slammed it on a table.

Unfortunately, Fine hid his drugs on the inside of that cap and when he slammed it…a bunch of crack rocks flew out everywhere on the floor. While he was picking up the crack, Lawler came in and spotted all the drugs on the floor. He fired Reggie B. Fine immediately on the spot. According to Fine, a couple of weeks later…Lawler called him up and asked him to return to the USWA to wrestle and all was forgiven.

Calling It Quits

The bitter and bloody feud between Magnum TA and Tully Blanchard in 1985, was one of pro wrestling’s greatest rivalries. It was a feud that had the feel of realism involved in it. Sometimes, art imitates life or vice versa. Tully Blanchard was married to a woman named Courtney who gave him four children…including wrestler Tessa. The couple divorced each other in 2000…by 2004…Courtney had remarried. This time, it was to Tully’s onscreen enemy Magnum TA.

On the surface, it doesn’t seem to be too much of a big deal. After all, Tully and his ex divorced four years prior. According to Tully’s former valet Baby Doll….it wasn’t exactly common knowledge to Blanchard about her relationship with Magnum. Baby Doll didn’t want to get into too many details about the relationship…other than Tully found out about his ex wife and Magnum after spotting a tattoo on Courtney’s ankle.

Apparently, the tattoo was Magnum’s name and that sparked real life tension between Tully and Magnum. The two former wrestlers seem to have for the most…put aside their personal differences for one another for the sake of Tully and Courtney’s children. Tully and Magnum have been pretty tight lipped about that part of their history together…but have posed for pictures together at conventions.

  1. Lifelong resident of Charlotte NC, and we fans did hear a lot of scuttlebutt, rumor and innuendo over the Magnum/Tully family issues. Many feel it went back farther with both simply not liking the other for a long time. But they were pros, and if anything was going down outside the business, they left it there and did what was right in the ring. Glad things are better now.

  2. Gallagher was also accused of having sex with an unconscious woman. She woke up and found him in bed with her and a condom in the waste basket. Not trying to dogpile, just want to point out this wasn’t an isolated accusation
