Help Wanted! Job Opportunities: The Young Bucks

Brian Damage

Back in the 80’s and 90’s, it was very common to see some no name wrestler go up against a proven star of a promotion. Whether that be from the WWF, NWA/WCW, AWA or elsewhere, these nomads of professional wrestling were there to make the stars look great. They were known as enhancement talent, preliminary wrestlers or as many fans have come to know them…”jobbers.” While fans were clamoring to see big time match ups, these “squash matches” served a very important purpose. While perhaps not appreciated at the time, they were just as important as the stars themselves.

After being in the wrestling business for a little over four years, Matt and Nick Jackson were considered a hot ticket on the Independent circuit. In 2008, they finally got a taste of the big stage in WWE. Matt Jackson was used twice on Smackdown as a singles wrestler where he got squashed by Chuck Palumbo and demolished by the Big Show in a ‘Last Man Standing Match’ where Big Show put the young wrestler through a table.

Matt and Nick Jackson were also utilized on WWE’s ECW brand. They were dressed up as Triple H and Shawn Michaels of DX to be mocked by the Miz and John Morrison. The end of the segment saw the Miz and Morrison beat up the DX imposters.

Just three years later in 2011, the Young Bucks would receive a WWE try out and not get signed. That perhaps, turned out to be the greatest thing that never happened to them, because Matt and Nick carved out their own successful path in professional wrestling. The Young Bucks wrestled for TNA, Ring of Honor and New Japan winning various tag team championships along the way.

Of course, the Young Bucks are currently signed with All Elite Wrestling, where they also serve as executive vice presidents. They have written a book called ‘Killing the Business’ and also produce a YouTube series called Being The Elite.

    • For some reason the reply button is missing from your lower posts so I’ll try to fit everything here.
First, you missed my point. They’re not outselling anything. AEW is outselling WWE. AEW does not equal Young Bucks. Do you really believe that these numbers would be different without them?
Second, AEW is on the rise not because of them, rather despite them. The booking has drastically improved and Tony Khan will soon realize (if he hasn’t already) that he’s been listening to the wrong people all along. If AEW keeps rolling like they are with Danielson and Punk and keeps positively shocking us like they have recently with Martha Hart (and WWE keeps getting killed from the inside for some reason), they’ll be fine. If on top of that they eliminate crap like Bucks flipfests, death matches, and dumb gimmicks like Orange Cassidy that set the business back to the circus days, if they start to train their wrestlers in psychology rather than teaching them moves that fail half the time, if they cut down on being spectacular for the sake of being spectacular (and to get stars from Meltzer), then they’ll be great, they’ll be able to turn into what Tony Khan promised us all along.
I can see you’re going to love AEW no matter what. Cool, your choice. But please stop pushing your opinions without any facts to back them up, that just makes you come off like a tool.

      • “Set the business back to the circus days”?

I wish. Back then they were still telling the fans it was real and booking people who looked like actual wrestlers to have actual wrestling matches. Shitlords like Orange Cassidy would be more accurately described as setting the business back to the absolute worst of 90s cartoon WWF.

    • Probably lot older then you and if you looked at bucks without you’re rose tinted glasses on you see was true .
You know what we probably will never agree on the bucks or aew .I’m more old school fan and like wrestlers to look like wrestlers and not make bussiness look a joke I’m probably just as bias as you are .
Did you see omega Bryan match ?

      • That’s not me in my profile pic. That’s Jena Malone. I don’t wear glasses, yet. Yes, I saw the Omega-Danielson match and it was great and I had no issue with the result. And don’t call Bryan Danielson by his slave name boy.

  2. I love these guys! AEW and specifically the young bucks brought me back from a casual interest fan to a super kick party wrestling fan. These two are great and are cementing their legacy as one of the best tag teams in modern history.

  3. Young Bucks are trash. It’s easy to look good when you’re one of the 50 EVPs of the company, signing other tag teams so you can make them job for you, as the Bucks have done with FTR. I don’t remember the last thing I saw that was more pathetic than the Bucks booking themselves to squash FTR.
