This Week in Wrestling 2021 Week 46

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 46th of 2021. Today Brian wonders about the long term future of NXT UK and shares all the best wrestling content from this week.

NXT UK 2.0 or 86’d?

With all the recent talent cuts and the re-branding of NXT to NXT 2.0, another WWE brand seems to be flying low under the radar. NXT UK which was the brain child of Triple H to globally expand the NXT brand with possible other locations in Japan, Australia and Mexico seems to be untouched. While those other locations have been scrapped, NXT UK remains in tact…for now. I can’t help but feel something is brewing and not necessarily for the better.

The NXT UK brand has some of the top international talents with names like Walter, A-Kid, Tyler Bate, Ilja Dragunov, Meiko Satomura, Blair Davenport and many more. While the talent on NXT UK programming continually put on excellent wrestling shows, one can’t help but wonder if Vince McMahon and company have any more use for the brand. Many of those wrestlers could easily transition to the main roster, but with Vince in control…I no longer have the confidence most can succeed without being given name and gimmick changes.

One wrestler in particular could be…in my view….a huge star and that wrestler is Walter. As we have seen by his record 870 day reign as NXT UK heavyweight champion and his hard hitting, five star matches…Walter has all the tools to be used as a monster on the main roster. The only thing that has kept him from real superstardom was his unwillingness to relocate to the United States. That has seemingly shifted a bit in recent months with Walter more open to wrestling more on U.S. soil. Imagine the type of matches he could have with the likes of Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Big E…etc. Of course many would be fearful, that McMahon would give him some sort of dancing/singing gimmick and ruin him.

WWE NXT UK Likely To Continue Amid #SpeakingOut Allegations

Regardless, here is hoping that NXT UK survives in the long term and all these questions become moot. It would be nice to see some of the NXT UK talent get opportunities on the main roster without being brought down by WWE’s sports entertainment outlook. NXT UK has been the very best show to watch in the WWE’s universe. Even though, it doesn’t nearly get the credit it so richly deserves.

  1. I feel like HHH’s legacy for NXT is just being erased away as he was trying to create something that would sustain the company’s future. Instead, his stupid father-in-law wants to go back to what worked back then only that it doesn’t. I feel bad for him as his heart is breaking at a lot of the talent he wanted to develop are just gone. Man… fuck Meekmahan-land.

      • Thanksgiving at the Meekmahan house is going to be interesting as I feel like there’s a part of him that wants to kill his father-in-law, his dumb-ass brother-in-law, and his idiotic mother-in-law right now. As for his wife, something will not only push him for a divorce but also full custody of his daughters.

    • I stated this before, but will say it again. I think Vince is finally starting to feel his age and is going to stick his fingers in all pieces of the WWE pie before he shuffles off this mortal coil. Before he dies, he is going to remind everyone that it is his show and no one else’s. A real shame.

  2. It’s concerning what is go happen to nxt UK see tho to create they killed almost every good indie in the UK and Europe there basically icw left n aload of mudshows now . Honestly the new direction of nxt is what Vince had planned from start create new wwe stars not grab this month’s indie sensation and try turn him WWE . Triple h knew or should of known it was coming at some point plus with roh looking like gone bellies up where was he go sign anyone from . Least it there some legit Indies left state side before it end up like the UK unfortunately for roh it look like it happen to late .

  3. If NXT UK lasts past Christmas, it’ll be a miracle. I wonder if Vince has honestly forgotten about them or delaying the inevitable as Nick Khan makes his case to cut them too. We’ll see. Personally I think they’re ALL better off voluntarily leaving before being released. Plenty of promotions not named AEW could use them all, especially the UK indy scene, which just about died with the advent of the NXT UK brand.

Do I feel bad overall for Paul Levesque? Sure to a point. I have no doubt the stress & personal heartache of seeing what he spent so much time building up being leveled & taken from him combined with his genetic heart defect lead to his heart problems.

But here’s the thing…I wouldn’t let sympathy for that blind you to the fact that he also used his position of power & influence to kill or stunt the careers of many promising main eventers for fear of “losing his spot” during his infamous reign of burials. Or how he & his father in law gleefully raided the indies in various countries, specifically here in the US & UK, to the determinant of various indy promotions that simply couldn’t afford to financially complete with Vince’s money. Essentially A big corporation constantly raiding a mom & pop business of their workers.
And they were simply going to do it with other countries as well had AEW not soundly beaten NXT in the ratings, causing Vince’s ego to pull the plug on everything.

Paul’s rich enough to be fine, even if he doesn’t work another day in his life. But the true testament to see if he’s really grown as a person of good character is whether or not he’ll break away from Vince, use everything he’s learned while working under Vince, and create his own company. The next 5-10 years will be VERY telling in the respect.

  4. I never have sympathy for HHH. Ho climb to power wasn’t easy and he worked REALLY hard to get to his level. However, the bodies he stacked during his climb and unapologetic manner speaks so loud.
