Wrestling With Sin: 380

Brian Damage

This is the 380th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.

Silent Screams

Shannon Spruill aka ‘Daffney’ was a former wrestler/valet in both WCW and TNA wrestling. She was dubbed the ‘Scream Queen’ because of her patented screams at ringside during matches. In September of 2021, Daffney posted a video on social media where she was in tears discussing the effects of concussions and CTE. She also talked about feeling alone by saying…“Do you guys not understand that I’m all alone?” All this while clutching on to what appeared to be a small hand gun.

After the video was posted, friends and family called local authorities to check up on the former wrestler. At first, the police had a hard time locating Spruill, as she had just moved to a new apartment just four days prior. When she was finally located at the new apartment, the door was locked, so the authorities broke it down only to discover Spruill deceased on her bed with a self inflicted gun shot wound to the chest. Shannon ‘Daffney’ Spruill was just 46 years old.

A Tragic Short Story

Cowboy Lang was a “midget wrestler”, who was trained by Lord Littlebrook and wrestled from the 1960’s until the 1990’s. Lang competed in some of the biggest venues across the country including the Louisiana Superdome, the Metrodome for the AWA’s WrestleRock show and Madison Square Garden for the WWWF. He was once good friends with ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair…who even mentioned Cowboy Lang in his autobiography. Flair said of Lang,“He’d walk around the dressing room in his cowboy hat and boots, with his dick hanging practically below his knees. He was a good guy, and loved to party after the shows. But he always expected me to get him laid.”

Towards the end of his career, the wear and tear of being a professional wrestler had caught up to Lang. He suffered from the aches and pains of putting his body through the rigors of the business. He was also involved in a very bitter divorce, where his ex wife took most of Lang’s money. Lang ended up battling alcoholism and being homeless on the streets of Portland, Oregon. Lang was penniless and was in and out of homeless shelters the last days of his life. In January of 2007, Lang’s body was discovered in a homeless shelter. No cause of death was ever revealed. Cowboy Lang was just 56 years old.

Little Wolf, Big Trouble

In March of 1941, a Minneapolis based wrestler named Chief Little Wolf…real name Earl Cluckey was having a few drinks at a tavern. Cluckey met with two women at the bar and began talking. They all ended up outside the tavern continuing their conversation, when an individual named Albert Johnson approached them. Johnson was apparently inebriated when he interrupted the wrestler and two females. Johnson allegedly was turned away and that is when Johnson called the females a derogatory name.

Cluckey responded by telling Johnson to leave and then called him a name. As Cluckey was walking back to the tavern, Johnson allegedly followed the wrestler and demanded that he repeat what the name the wrestler called him. Earl Cluckey repeated himself and and that caused a physical confrontation between the two men. Cluckey punched Johnson resulting in Johnson falling to the ground. Earl Cluckey then allegedly got on a trolley and left the scene.

Albert Johnson was discovered unconscious about an hour later and was sent to the hospital. He had suffered a fractured skull and eventually died at the hospital. Cluckey was eventually arrested and tried for murder. Multiple witnesses came forward stating that the deceased Johnson was the aggressor in the confrontation. Earl ‘Chief Little Wolf’ Cluckey was ultimately found not guilty by a grand jury.

Rollin’ Down the Street Smokin’ Indo…

‘The Godfather’ Charles Wright recalled a story where he and his buddy Viscera were travelling on the road together. According to Wright, he was smoking weed while driving and Viscera was in the passenger seat rolling joints. During this time, a cop drove past the two wrestlers. Upon seeing them, the officer slowed down and got behind them flashing his lights to pull them over. While the Godfather and Viscera were on the side of the road waiting for the cop to come to them, the APA of John Layfield and Ron Simmons drove by.

Realizing that their buddies might be in trouble, the APA turned their car around and tried to run interference for both the Godfather and Viscera. The APA pulled behind the police car and distracted the cop as Wright and Viscera hid their marijuana. As it turned out, the cop was a wrestling fan who recognized the wrestlers and wanted autographs and pictures. All this, while a police dog was in the car barking like crazy. Wright surmises that the officer knew they were both high as the smell from their car was strong, but let his fandom get in the way of his job. They gladly gave the cop what he wanted and were let go.

  1. That whole Daffney thing still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth how that whole thing went down. On one hand I feel more could’ve been done to help her, on the other, she also needed to reach out for said help before doing what she did. Then there’s the sick fuck on Twitter who refused to take down the video of her livestream despite the urging of her family & fans. Regardless I truly hope she’s finally at peace now, free from the demons & pain that haunted her so.
