This Week in Wrestling 2022 Week 20

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 20th entry of 2022. Today Brian takes a look at the incident involving Sasha Banks and Naomi and the wrestling return of the ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair and shares all the best wrestling content from this week.

Who’s the Boss?

There has been a lot of talk this week involving the WWE Women’s tag team champions of Sasha Banks and Naomi. The duo disagreed with creative plans for them and decided to drop the tag titles off to John Laurinaitis and walk out the door. It completely screwed up the main event of the evening on Raw and changed the creative direction going into the Hell in a Cell event.

Lots of talk on social media by fans, wrestlers and announcers, all of which had differing opinions. CM Punk was in favor of Banks and Naomi walking out and standing up for what they believed in. WWE commentator Corey Graves called their actions unprofessional. Fans also chimed in with some supporting their decision and others saying that they should both be fired from the company. From what info I could gather reading news…this seems more of a Sasha Banks issue more than it is a Naomi issue. It seems that Naomi is just supporting Sasha’s decision to walk out. I may be wrong on that, but in any case…Naomi did make the call to walk out as well.

The former Road Dogg Brian James was asked about the situation and said this…“Today’s talent make good money. And if you’re making millions of dollars and you walk out because of creative, then you have bigger problems.” Personally, I do not like how Banks and Naomi handled this situation. They signed a contract and are obligated to perform under that contract. If they have issues with creative and feel their voices aren’t being heard….honor your obligations and then take it up with Vince afterwards. If he still doesn’t agree with you, they still are obligated to honor the contract they signed.

This isn’t the first time Sasha Banks has been disgruntled and walked away. She has been categorized by some in the locker room as having a massive ego and a malcontent. Tessa Blanchard has been said to have the same attitude, yet she is much more maligned than Sasha is. Neither should get a pass for this kind of behavior. Not Sasha, Tessa, Naomi, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and every other wrestler that has displayed egos and power trips. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sasha as a wrestler…same for Naomi, who for years was misused…I just don’t agree with how they went about things. The question now is…what happens next? Will they be released? Get their way? Is this all an elaborate work as former WWE wrestler Aiden English surmised? Who knows…but we might soon enough.

Flair for the Dramatics

It was announced this week that the Nature Boy Ric Flair is coming out of retirement to have one, final match. At 73 years old, there is definitely a big risk involved. Flair has assured fans that he is in great shape and wants to do this. Ricky Steamboat, who had so many classic matches with Flair…has either backed out of wrestling Flair or was never really considered. In either case, Steamboat wants to remain retired.

Flair on the other hand has been training hard in the gym and practicing in the ring with wrestler Jay Lethal. Most have said let Flair be Flair and do what he wants to do. Others said this could be like watching a suicide take place on live television. No matter what are opinions are, Flair will always do whatever he wants to do. He has his entire career. Flair once was quoted as saying…“I’d rather die in the ring. If I have to go.” He recently reiterated that by saying…. “I’m Going To Die, And It’s Either Going To Be Next To My Hot Wife Or In The Ring.”

We mustn’t forget that Flair was on his deathbed back 2017 doing whatever he wanted to do…and at that point it was partying and drinking heavily. The man Richard Fliehr died a very long time ago. He has lived his wrestling persona ever since. Even though Ric Flair has said he wants to die in the ring, should we as fans allow that to happen? If someone said they wanted to commit suicide, do we just say okay, that is what they wanted…or…do we try to help and save them from themselves? Here’s hoping that whatever happens, it turns out okay for him and his friends, family and loved ones.

  1. I usually don’t like the idea of people walking out on a show unless it’s something serious but what WWE did by airing out their own dirty laundry was unprofessional. Now with their propaganda about what Naomi and Sasha did and telling the fans that those 2 let the fans down is bullshit. It’s WWE that is letting the fans down as this is just typical bullshit.

I have no interest in seeing Ric Flair wrestle as if he’s inviting everyone to see him die in the ring and then watch the funeral. Fuck that.

I know I’ve been considering myself to be a fanboy for AEW but… I’m really not liking what they’ve done with the TNT title as I am really just bored by the whole Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti vs. America’s Top Team. Honestly, I don’t give a fuck about either of them. Plus, I would rather have Sky drop the TNT title to Swerve or PAC. Have Sammy briefly join the Jericho Appreciation Society to feud with Wheeler Yuta and have Tay go to Japan for excursion.

  2. I don’t want to see Ric die but if i had the choice, I’d rather have it happen in the ring vs slowly rotting away in a hospital bed for days.

  3. For the love all creation Ric, please stop. Stop being the Nature Boy. Yeah, I know, it’s probably too late. But he should never, ever, get in the ring again.
