For many wrestlers, being at the top of the marquee of WWE’s biggest event Wrestlemania, is a career highlight. Not many can say they main evented Wrestlemania. Despite being the top match on wrestling’s top show…there have been matches on the undercard that have at times overshadowed the main event. Today on the blog, we look at a few of those matches that were far more talked about than the main event itself.
Honorable Mention: Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs Bret Hart (Wrestlemania 13)
Kofi Kingston Vs Daniel Bryan

While the Wrestlemania 35 main event was noteworthy and historic for featuring women in the main event…that being Becky Lynch vs Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair…no doubt that Kofimania stole the show. Kofi Kingston defeated Daniel Bryan to become the WWE champion in a fantastic match.
The Undertaker Vs Shawn Michaels

Anytime the Undertaker went up against Shawn Michaels…it was pure magic. At Wrestlemania 25, the two did battle in an instant classic. Who remembers the main event for that show without cheating? It was Triple H versus Randy Orton. Not a bad match, but completely hard to measure up to these two legends.
The Hardy Boyz Vs The Dudley Boyz Vs Edge and Christian

Wrestlemania 17 or X-Seven as it was known was perhaps one of the best cards in the history of the event. With all that said, the ladder match for the tag team titles between The Hardys/Dudleys/Edge and Christian was a show stealer. The spear from the top of the ladder by Edge on Jeff Hardy was insane and still very much talked about. As for the main event…The Rock versus Stone Cold Steve Austin with Austin turning heel was something…just not at the level of the ladder match.
Hulk Hogan Vs The Rock

Wrestlemania 18’s main event was Chris Jericho versus Triple H, but most fans remember that show for the epic encounter between Hulk Hogan and The Rock. To say that the Toronto Skydome was rockin’ for this match would be an absolute understatement. In many ways, this was the main event of the evening. By the time Triple H and Y2J went on….the crowd was completely exhausted.
Randy Savage Vs Ricky Steamboat

As a kid watching this match on closed circuit television, I was absolutely captivated from opening bell to closing bell. A true wrestling match that was both methodical and fast paced. Sure, Hulk Hogan versus Andre the Giant still had some meaning, but there was no denying that Savage/Steamboat stole the show at the Pontiac Silverdome at Wrestlemania III.
Here’s a few:
Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle-WrestleMania 21
Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair-WrestleMania VIII
Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper-WrestleMania VIII
CM Punk vs. the Undertaker-WrestleMania 29
Daniel Bryan vs. HHH-WrestleMania XXX

I’d add Bret vs. Owen and Bret vs. Austin.
Oh, and Bundy vs. SD Jones for the sheer stupidity of having an almost 25-second match announced as 9… Come to think of it, that one has a place on the top 5 of situations where fans were treated like dumbasses.
