Back in 1997 Manchester United have been crowned Premier League Champions without actually kicking a ball. Liverpool’s failure to defeat Wimbledon was enough to hand the title to The Red Devils with one match left to play. Elsewhere, a 50 year old Sylvester Stallone married his 28 year old girlfriend and Tiger Woods keeps winning golf tournaments. Meanwhile, in WCW: 1997 Week 18

Back in 1997 the big film of the week was ‘The Fifth Element’. Set in the 23rd century, Bruce Willis plays taxi driver who unwittingly finds himself in the middle of the fight between good and evil. Sounds nothing like Die Hard, but thankfully Bruce still essentially plays John McClane. Elsewhere, a car race on TBS lasted ages to deny us WCW Saturday Night while Nitro was trimmed to an hour due to the NBA Playoffs. Meanwhile, in WCW: 1997 Week 16

Remember DVDs, those discs that sit on a shelf but you don’t use because you have access to digital media? Well, back in 1997 they were just starting to take off. Warner Home Video lead the charge with 41 releases so far while Columbia Tristar got in on the action this week with their first release. Problem is, an actual DVD player will set you back between £300 and £400, that’s around $500. Yikes, but let’s get down to business in this week’s ‘Meanwhile, in WCW’…

It was quite a week for wrestling 20 years ago. ECW, America’s third largest promotion, staged it’s very first pay per view – Barely Legal – at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia. The following night, WCW rolled into town and staged a live Nitro at the CoreStates Spectrum down the road.
