Happy new year! Well, the day has finally arrived; today marks the end of our 1997 timeline. It sounds like a cliché to say that all previous Meanwhile, in WCW posts have been building towards this one, but they really have. This week WCW reached its zenith by presenting Starrcade 1997, the highest grossing pay per view the company ever produced. With the holiday season almost upon us in 2017, it was a similar story back in 1997 too. Christmas brings a lot of traditions but one that is a sure-fire way to make people of a certain age feel even older is a big movie release! Meanwhile, in WCW: 1997 Week 49

T’is the season, and funnily enough it was this time 20 years ago too. However, one man who was not full of Christmas cheer in 1997 was Golden State Warrior’s shooting guard Latrell Sprewell. He started his week by attacking his own coach at a practice session and by Friday he found himself suspended from the NBA for a year and his $23.7 million contract terminated. 20 years ago the world of wrestling had another busy week, but busiest of anyone was Rick Rude. The Ravishing one managed to appear on WWF Raw and WCW Nitro in the same night, while apparently displaying an exceptional rate of facial hair growth.
