Hair Raising Tales: Stories Behind Some Infamous Head Shaving Moments in Wrestling

One of the classic storylines in pro wrestling history, has to deal with hair. Many wrestlers throughout the years have had glorious heads of hair. Some have used their follicles to advance storylines and in many cases…their very own careers. Hair versus hair, hair versus mask and/or hair versus career matches have had a place in wrestling for a very long time. These type of specialty matches were popularized in Mexico starting in 1940 when the first luchas de apuestas (“matches with wagers”) took place between luchadors Octavio and Murcielago in a hair vs mask match. There have been countless matches with hair being put on the line ever since.

A Moment in Time: The Night Owen Hart “Won” the WWF Title

Owen Hart achieved so many things during his WWF career. He was an Intercontinental and European champion, a tag team champion, a Slammy award winner and a King of the Ring winner. For many of Owen’s fans, the one title that alluded him and deserved so richly was the WWF title. For one night in August of 1994, the ‘King of Harts’ unlocked that achievement…even for just a minute or so.

The Push Into Nowhere: Virgil’s Million Dollar Victory

For years, Virgil aka Mike Jones was used as a personal bodyguard to top WWF heel ‘The Million Dollar Man’ Ted Dibiase. Virgil was supposedly used as an ‘inside joke’ by Vince McMahon to take a few jabs at the NWA/WCW head booker Dusty Rhodes whose real name was Virgil Runnels. Bruce Prichard has since denied those rumors…although those rumors remain. In any case, Virgil was always in the corner of Dibiase…often helping the Million Dollar Man win matches via his interference. In late 1990 and early 1991…the WWF was slowly turning Virgil against his employer.

In the era of professional wrestling managers, Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan was arguably the very best. His career as a manager spanned close to 30 years and led some of the biggest names in the business. By 1991, Bobby was burned out by the road and was physically breaking down. Heenan made the decision to retire as a full time manager and focus his career on being a broadcast journalist. His quit wit and comedic timing working side by side with Gorilla Monsoon and Vince McMahon made him a favorite with WWF fans…even if he was portraying a heel color commentator.

He was over as both a babyface and heel, cut memorable promos and always seemed to have the pulse of the fans who were paying to see him. That is why in 2003, WWE fans were given perhaps the greatest incarnation of ‘The Great One.’ This version was “Hollywood” Rock and this is the story of how the character came to be.
