Being a young wrestling fan nowadays, seems to offer them every imaginable aspect of the wrestling business like never before. From the “dirt sheets” to websites, to streaming services and everything in between…a fan can access anything and everything. Growing up in the 1980’s, it was a much different era. The internet was in its infancy and cable TV was a luxury that most couldn’t afford. To be a wrestling fan back then, meant you usually watched just one promotion and really weren’t familiar with much else. It was the wrestling magazines that invited the reader into a whole other world outside of their one territory.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s, it was very common to see some no name wrestler go up against a proven star of a promotion. Whether that be from the WWF, NWA/WCW, AWA or elsewhere, these nomads of professional wrestling were there to make the stars look great. They were known as enhancement talent, preliminary wrestlers or as many fans have come to know them…”jobbers.” While fans were clamoring to see big time match ups, these “squash matches” served a very important purpose. While perhaps not appreciated at the time, they were just as important as the stars themselves.

In 1991, World Championship Wrestling was in a serious state of change. Ric Flair had turned his back and walked away from the company…taking the world title (aka The Big Gold Belt) with him to the WWF. With Flair and the title gone, WCW executive Jim Herd made Lex Luger “the chosen one” and crowned him the new WCW world champion at the Great American Bash that year. With a new champion and new title belt to go along with it….Herd wasn’t satisfied. He wanted to make sure wrestling fans knew he had THE world champion in all of pro wrestling.
