One of the most used gimmicks in wrestling is an invasion angle. We’ve been treated to some that were spectacularly successful such as the nWo in WCW.  On the flipside, others have been less successful: the WCW/ECW invasion of WWE in the early 00s, anyone? One invasion angle is rarely discussed and that’s Jim Cornette’s NWA invading the WWF in late 1997/early 1998 and that will be the focus of this ‘Well That Didn’t Work‘ piece. Continue reading

Brian Damage, Benjamin Trecroci, ‘Lowlife’ Louie Ramos, Amerigo Diehl and Jamie Lithgow

Tomorrow will mark the 17th anniversary of the end of World Championship Wrestling. It really is hard to believe that the company that once had the WWF and Vince McMahon against the ropes is no longer with us. In today’s Sunday Sermon, we look back at that fateful day. What were your reactions? How did you feel when Shane McMahon appeared on WCW Nitro? What went wrong and what could they have done better to survive. Continue reading

Meanwhile, in WCW: 1997 Week 52

Jamie Lithgow

Happy new year! Well, the day has finally arrived; today marks the end of our 1997 timeline. It sounds like a cliché to say that all previous Meanwhile, in WCW posts have been building towards this one, but they really have. Jamie Lithgow

With the holiday season almost upon us in 2017, it was a similar story back in 1997 too. Christmas brings a lot of traditions but one that is a sure-fire way to make people of a certain age feel even older is a big movie release! One of the big movies out in 1997 this week was the 18th James Bond film; Tomorrow Never Dies, staring Pierce Brosnan. Yes folks, that was 20 years ago! Anyway, let’s see what was happening in the squared circle 20 years ago in this week’s Meanwhile, in WCW’… Continue reading

Meanwhile, in WCW: 1997 Week 49

Jamie Lithgow

T’is the season, and funnily enough it was this time 20 years ago too. However, one man who was not full of Christmas cheer in 1997 was Golden State Warrior’s shooting guard Latrell Sprewell. He started his week by attacking his own coach at a practice session and by Friday he found himself suspended from the NBA for a year and his $23.7 million contract terminated. Now that’s a crap week, but let’s see if anyone ‘down south’ could top it in this week’s ‘Meanwhile, in WCW’… Continue reading
