CM Punk is the latest superstar vying to end The Undertaker’s streak

Since defeating ‘Superfly’ Jimmy Snuka at Wrestlemania VII, The Undertaker has gone on to win every single match he’s had a Wrestlemania creating a streak that has become as important a part of his legacy as it is to the history of Wrestlemania.

Of course, no-one will ever describe every single match he’s had as a classic – far from it – and you could argue that it really didn’t get going until Wrestlemania 13 when he defeated Sid for the WWF Championship. But credit where credit is due; in a lot of those situation he’s done the best he could with a bad hand. He was never going to squeeze a Flair v Steamboat match out of The Giant Gonzalez at Wrestlemania 9 and King Kong Bundy, his opponent two years later, was past his best when they locked horns. But still, you can’t take away from him the fact he has had such a lengthy undefeated streak at the grandest stage of them all. In this Sermon, the team look at the importance and discuss their favourite moments from it. Continue reading

Can CM Punk end The Undertaker’s streak

Craig Wilson

At Wrestlemania 28, Taker went 20-0. Can CM Punk stop him making it 21?

The most recent edition to the card, having been officially booked at the end of the recent Old School Raw episode, is the match where CM Punk joins a long list of superstars hoping to end The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak.

It is an incredible list of superstars that have tried, and failed, to defeat The Undertaker and include WWE Hall of Famers Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Edge, Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka and Ric Flair yet there is a buzz that this year that streak could end. The first time there has been such a buzz in a very long time.

Whilst I felt that a four way to determine who would face the Undertaker was beneath the streak, I am looking forward to this match. Now, can Punk end the streak? Well, right now I’m completely torn. As it is understood, Punk was the man that The Undertaker personally chose to face him at Wrestlemania. We are all too aware that The Undertaker’s body isn’t of the ability to withstand the rigours of a regular wrestling schedule, hence the light appearances in the last few years, and he deems Punk as someone he can trust in the ring. A contrast here would be if Taker was booked to fight, say, Ryback at ‘mania.

You have to ask the question, though, has ‘taker chosen Punk simply because he trusts him or does he also have hopes to pass the torch onto Punk. With Punk being only 34 and having many years left at the top, he would benefit from getting the rub. One superstar that would not need that rub would be John Cena and such a move on his part to end the streak would more than likely cause a heel turn.

But what are some other options:

Taker wins setting up Punk v Taker Mk II next year: with long term vision, this could be a great option for Punk. Similar to the way that Michaels fought Taker twice with the second defeat causing his retirement, but instead Taker goes into WM30 as Champion and Punk – who lets say wins the Rumble – faces Taker in the Wrestlemania rematch and wins the title.

Taker v Brock at WM30: This has been the dream match in many people’s eyes since the two famously exchanged words at UFC 121.

Sure, it’s a dream match and more than worthy of a Wrestlemania headline match, but ‘taker would have a very different match indeed against Lesnar than he would have against Punk and is his body up to that? I have to suggest that no, no it’s not.

Cena ends the streak: The worst case scenario, if you will. Cena is one superstar who doesn’t need the ‘rub’ of ending the streak as it would make absolutely no difference to his drawing power or position in the roster. In fact, I believe it would also likely end up seeing a heel turn for him to be able to do it. Face Cena v Face ‘Taker hasn’t really got much in the way of appeal to it.

I fully believe that if Punk is unable to win this year, the two will face each other next year. If nothing else, it’s created the position where fans actually think there is at least a small chance that The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania opponent can actually end the streak.

If, as widely believed, The Undertaker chose Punk owing to the turst and respect he has for him, then there every chance that he may want Punk to be the man to end his streak.

That said, there is another option, maybe The Undertaker retires undefeated at Wrestlemania.
