The Way We Was: 1996 Week 17

The Way We Was

Jamie Lithgow

It’s time once again to push the rewind button and head back to 1996. Top of the UK Charts for the second consecutive week is Mark Morrison with ‘Return of The Mack’. Over in the states the NBA Playoffs have started. In the Eastern Conference a Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls have taken a commanding two game lead over the Miami Heat. Shaq’s Orlando Magic and Patrick Ewing’s New York Knicks are also looking strong. Out west San Antonio, Utah and Seattle are looking like the teams to beat. That’s enough basketball – because no doubt we’ll hear plenty about it from Eric Bischoff in the coming weeks – so let’s head to Raw and Nitro for this week’s ‘The Way We Was‘ …

The Way We Was: 1996 Week 16

The Way We Was

Jamie Lithgow

It’s Friday which means it must be 1996 again. There was a lack of news this week, unless you count Bobby Brown being arrested again as news?! However, there was one significant story from this week that will jog some memories. This one is for the football – or soccer – fans out there; this past weekend marked 20 years since the Manchester United players blamed their awful grey kit for their even worse performance against Southampton. Apparently they fell 3-0 behind in the first half because the players couldn’t see each other due to the camouflaging nature of the kit against the backdrop of the fans. Sounds like a lame excuse for a crap performance to me, but they did get a goal back after changing into a blue and white kit for the second half. Let’s see if Hulk Hogan blames his outfit for his performance in this week’s ‘The Way We Was‘ …

The Way We Was: 1996 Week 15

The Way We Was

It’s Friday, which of course means that we shall once again travel back to 1996 to see what the world looked like. Top of the music charts in the UK was Firestarter by The Prodigy, while the slightly more wholesome James and The Giant Peach hit cinema screens. In showbiz news, a 27 year old Halle Berry filed for divorce from some baseball guy. In technology news the rollout of DVDs has been held up. Videos, on a CD? Are you sure?! Sounds like witchcraft to me so let’s see what was happening in the world of wrestling instead. No Nitro this week because TNT showed a movie, but Raw was on – and it was good – so let’s start this week’s The Way We WasContinue reading

The Way We Was: 1996 Week 14

The Way We Was

Jamie Lithgow

It has been quite a week in 2016, and it was just as eventful in 1996. I am of course referring specifically to the world of wrestling because in the wider world the only significant news I could find was Mike Tyson having another scrape with the law and the Olsen twins – who were 9 years old in 1996 – signing a book deal for 14 books. They’ve only just learned how to write?! Anyway, just as we had Wrestlemania 32 this week, the folks in 1996 were treated to Wrestlemania 12. So, without any further ado, let’s see what happened on the subsequent episode of Raw as well as WCW Nitro in this week’s ‘The Way We Was‘ …

The Way We Was: Wrestlemania XII

WM12

Jamie Lithgow

Unless you have been living under a rock, you cannot have failed to notice that Wrestlemania was this past weekend. While most people will be talking about Wrestlemania XXXII, Jamie – as regular readers will know – has a tendency to live in the past. This past weekend marked 20 years since Wrestlemania XII, i.e. the one with the Ironman Match. So – and for the second week in a row – we present to you a special bonus Thursday edition of The Way We Was, as Jamie runs down significant happenings from Wrestlemania XII… Continue reading

The Way We Was: 1996 Week 13

The Way We Was

It’s Friday, so that must mean we’ve travelled back to 1996. Remember a few weeks ago when 2-Pac was caught with an illegal firearm in his car? Well this week a judge sentenced him to 120 days in the jail for violating the terms of his parole. Another silly boy appears to be MC Hammer. The dancing rapper made over $32 million in 1990, but this week it was revealed that he is $10 million in debt. On this side of the pond, Aston Villa beat Leeds United 3-0 in the Coca-Cola Cup Final at the old Wembley Stadium. Speaking of Wembley, it hosted Summerslam ’92, which was a wrestling show. So without further ado let’s take a look at a couple of other wrestling shows from the 90’s in this week’s ‘The Way We Was‘ …

The Way We Was

We’re hanging out in 1996 again. This week saw Mel Gibson and his film Braveheart do the business at the 68th Annual Academy Awards. At least his re-telling of history got better in his subsequent movies. But seriously, with both WWE and WCW building towards pay per views, Raw and Nitro were both pretty good this week.  So, let’s get down to business in this week’s edition of ‘The Way We Was‘ …

The Way We Was

It’s Friday, which means it must be Monday night in 1996. The big news from this week 20 years ago cannot be avoided, especially as someone who attended a Scottish primary school on March 13th 1996. The Dunblane Primary School massacre occurred this week. A tragic event and with no other significant news from this week let’s get straight into Raw and Nitro in  ‘The Way We Was‘ …

The Way We Was

It’s 1996 again! This week 20 years ago it was announced that Metallica would headline Lollapalooza. I wonder how that news will go down? At the cinema, the Coen brother’s awesome film; Fargo was released. In wrestling, and just as in the future, WWE was the only game in town. Nitro was pre-empted so that TNT could show Andersonville; a TV movie about a prisoner of war camp during the American Civil War. Sounds like a hoot! So, let’s see what happened on Raw in Week 10 of ‘The Way We Was‘ …
