The ‘If Factor’ are a series of articles that takes a look at real scenarios in pro wrestling that at one point or another were suggested, planned, considered…but did not get the green light to continue. What would the landscape of professional wrestling look like if these ideas came to fruition?
Some managers and wrestlers fit perfectly as a pairing. I think of Jimmy Hart and HonkyTonk Man, Bobby Heenan and Paul Orndorff, Gary Hart and the Great Muta, Paul Bearer and the Undertaker, Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express are just a few examples of solid pairings. Then there are those that really made no sense or didn’t seem to right at all. Today’s Top Five, looks at odd pairings of a manager and wrestler that simply never looked or felt right.
A gimmick is something that is intended to hook the attention of fans to a wrestler. They may be outrageous or steeped more in reality, whatever the case may be…some have succeeded and many others have failed. The Gimmick Table takes a look at the origins of some of your favorite and not so favorite gimmicks of professional wrestlers.
I can still recall the first time that I had tuned into Georgia Championship Wrestling and heard the voice that would forever be associated with the sport of professional wrestling. We had just recently started to receive cable in our area in Pennsylvania and after being raised on the questionable antics of the WWWF, I was hungry to witness some of the action from elsewhere. One Saturday afternoon I was switching around the dial when I happened upon Championship Wrestling on the Superstation WTBS. I immediately took notice of the difference in products. Not only was I seeing wrestler’s that I had only read about in the various Apter magazines, but the entire product was delivered as a realistic creation including the unmistakable sound of the lead announcer. It was, of course, the inimitable Gordon Solie. I recall being impressed as Solie called the matches and sometime later in the program, they showed some clips from a match in an arena. Talk about a breath of fresh air! Suddenly wrestling seemed completely legitimate and believable. Needless to say, I was hooked.
This is the 493rd installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.

There is an old saying that goes, “All things happen for a reason.” It can be true in everyday life, but for the sake of this blog, we will keep it pro wrestling related. Sometimes things are done or happen that were simply meant to be…even if that was not the intention at first. Here are my top five moments that perhaps indirectly (or maybe directly) changed the wrestling business.
