Unsung Hero of Wrestling: ‘Flamboyant’ Eric Embry

Douglas Eric Embry, also known as “Flamboyant” Eric Embry wasn’t the biggest dog in the fight but surely, he had to have had the biggest heart in the sport. A known bleeder, Embry, was the booker in many organizations and is reputed to have one of the best minds in the game. Making his debut in 1977, Embry received his start working in such territories as Eddie Graham’s Championship Wrestling from Florida and Joe Blanchard’s Southwest Championship Wrestling, based in San Antonio.

Memories of watching wrestling back in the 60’s

I can still recall the Saturday afternoon that I stumbled upon a broadcast of Championship Wrestling from Georgia on WTBS. After being raised on years of WWWF product, the product from Georgia smacked of a realism that I had never been exposed to. What I really liked was the announcer: Gordon Solie. He never raised his voice but spoke in an even controlled manner. He called the action as he saw it and he seemed to have a through understanding of human anatomy. There also was his trademark of referring to some one that was busted open as wearing “a crimson mask.” The fact that various wrestlers bleed frequently was something that impressed me as well. The talent pool was completely different than that of the WWWF. Instead of time filling matches with various jobbers and their opponents, Championship Wrestling from Georgia showed matches that were filmed on location from various locations. Simply seeing this footage added a necessary element of realism that was missing from the programming I was used to.
