The WWF/WWE has had some type of developmental system for years now. Whether it was the USWA, Ohio Valley, Power Pro, Heartland, Deep South, Florida Championship Wrestling or NXT…many of the company’s top superstars got their start in at least one of them. While some developmental names like John Cena, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, The Miz, Brock Lesnar and Charlotte Flair all made big stars of themselves by first training in developmental, others never got to see the light of day. This series will focus on those wrestlers…the ones that at some point were a lock to get called up to the main roster and never quite made it. What once was hot, suddenly became a “not” as a WWE superstar.

All the talk of the Women’s Revolution is very real, as we are now seeing more and more women in high profile matches and even main eventing big shows. Before we can talk about the current crop of female talents, we must first look back into history to find the true trailblazers of women’s wrestling. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, it was very common to see some no name wrestler go up against a proven star of a promotion. Whether that be from the WWF, NWA/WCW, AWA or elsewhere, these nomads of professional wrestling were there to make the stars look great. They were known as enhancement talent, preliminary wrestlers or as many fans have come to know them…”jobbers.” While fans were clamoring to see big time match ups, these “squash matches” served a very important purpose. While perhaps not appreciated at the time, they were just as important as the stars themselves.

As we all know, professional Wrestling has played a part of many memorable moments in its history. The wrestling business has contributed to the history of the world in so many different ways. Ways we probably don’t even realize. Whether it was expanding nationally, then globally, its involvement in politics, civil rights, going mainstream in television and movies and the women’s revolution…pro wrestling has seemingly done it all. Speaking of “revolutions”…believe it or not, wrestling also had a hand in a different kind of revolution. An actual real revolution in the 1950’s….the Cuban Revolution.

Growing up a wrestling fan in the 1980’s, wrestling news was not easy to come by. I remember going to my local convenience store and picking up a couple of wrestling magazines like Pro Wrestling Illustrated and/or The Wrestler and others to get my fix of news outside of the WWF. While I thoroughly enjoyed flipping through the various magazines and reading about wrestlers and wrestling promotions across the country I never heard of, the truth was that the info was weeks and sometimes months in the past. It wasn’t until I discovered the magic of pro wrestling hotlines that I suddenly became a wannabe wrestling “insider.” One hotline in particular became an almost daily routine to call and that the “Coach Kurt” hotline.
