Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler: 3 Decades of WWE Royalty

After over three decades working with World Wrestling Entertainment, Jerry’ the King’ Lawler is no longer under a full time contract with the company. He is still signed to a legend’s deal, so we may still see Lawler pop up from time to time. This does mark the end of a glorious era the King was a huge part of. Today, we will be discussing his WWF/WWE career overall and what he meant to the company for over 30 years.

A History of the Smoky Mountain Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship

From 1991-1995, Smoky Mountain Wrestling served as a wrestling promotion dedicated to broadcasting wrestling as it used to be. The brainchild of Jim Cornette and bankrolled by Rick Rubin, the promotion was an interesting spectacle: a legitimate southern throwback promotion which served as a melting pot for future stars, wrestling icons, and overlooked workers. Its world title belt, which existed for under four years, is in itself an interesting delve into the philosophy of Smoky Mountain and the stars that drove the shoestring-budget show.

At Survivor Series 1994, Jerry ‘the King’ Lawler challenged Doink the Clown to a traditional Survivor Series match. It would be the ‘Royal Family’ captained by Lawler with his partners “midget” wrestlers Cheesy, Queasy and Sleazy versus ‘Clowns R Us’ Captained by Doink teaming with Dink, Pink and our guest today…the yellow haired Wink. The King And Sigh: The Failed Attempt to Get Jerry Lawer in WCW

In 1991, World Championship Wrestling was in a serious state of change. Ric Flair had turned his back and walked away from the company…taking the world title (aka The Big Gold Belt) with him to the WWF. With Flair and the title gone, WCW executive Jim Herd made Lex Luger “the chosen one” and crowned him the new WCW world champion at the Great American Bash that year. With a new champion and new title belt to go along with it….Herd wasn’t satisfied. He wanted to make sure wrestling fans knew he had THE world champion in all of pro wrestling.
