A really great gimmick can really start off a career in the right direction. On the other hand, a bad one could temporarily or even permanently ruin a wrestling career. This week’s top five looks at a few bad early gimmicks that really never had a shot of succeeding.
Grappling with Tragedy is a series of articles that deal with unfortunate, tragic incidents that have occurred throughout the history of professional wrestling. It is unlike the ‘Wrestling with Sin’ series that deals more with the seedier side of wrestling like arrests, murders and suicides. Grappling looks more at particular tragic incidents that have in some instances altered pro wrestling in some way.
If the name Emily Feinberg doesn’t ring a bell, you are probably not alone. The thing is, she was the woman who came very close to helping nearly take down Vince McMahon Jr and the then World Wrestling Federation in 1994. Who was she and how important was her intimate knowledge of Vince and the WWF? Very important if you were with the FBI.
This is the 391st installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s, it was very common to see some no name wrestler go up against a proven star of a promotion. Whether that be from the WWF, NWA/WCW, AWA or elsewhere, these nomads of professional wrestling were there to make the stars look great. Virgil was supposedly used as an ‘inside joke’ by Vince McMahon to take a few jabs at the NWA/WCW head booker Dusty Rhodes whose real name was Virgil Runnels. Bruce Prichard has since denied those rumors…although those rumors remain. In any case, Virgil was always in the corner of Dibiase…often helping the Million Dollar Man win matches via his interference. In late 1990 and early 1991…the WWF was slowly turning Virgil against his employer.
