This Week in Wrestling 2020 Week 24

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 24th of 2020. Today Brian talks about the need for a mega star in pro wrestling and questions if smaller wrestlers have hurt the current product. All that plus all the best content from around the world wide web

The Small Package

No doubt about it, there is a ton of wrestling options out there nowadays for fans to view. The question is though, is it all worth watching? I received a few comments from readers of the blog that the reason they no longer watch the current wrestling product…whether it be WWE, AEW, Impact, MLW or whatever is because there are no more larger than life characters to watch. Most of the wrestlers today are small in stature and while many can wrestle…it has become more of a gymnastics display than actual wrestling.

AEW and NXT have had okay ratings to their shows…but nothing spectacular. The same could be said of Raw and Smackdown, whose ratings have hit all time lows. I think it would be fair to say that some of that could be attributed to the current situations we are all living in. Maybe fans have tuned out wrestling because they are more interested in watching the news or maybe they don’t enjoy the current format with wrestlers posing as fans. There may be something to the issue with there is no larger than life super character to get casual fans to back and watch.

Becky Lynch definitely became that type of individual, but she is out for probably a year. John Cena has gone Hollywood and is no longer the go to guy for a WWE fix. Roman Reigns might be the closest to a John Cena type…but has been home ever since the pandemic started. Right now, the biggest star in pro wrestling just might be AEW’s Chris Jericho. As great as Jericho has been over the years and his ability to adapt and make himself relatable for decades…he is 49 years old.

The complaints that I have gotten in relation to today’s stars is that they all seem the same…very generic and they lack size. It was The Road Dogg Brian James who said that Adam Cole would probably be a WWE world champion already if it weren’t for his size. Is that really an issue? Do fans need to see a 6’8 star with muscles to be considered legitimate. Maybe to casual fans, but certainly not to the hardcore wrestling fans. The thing is, are hardcore fans enough to make a promotion profitable?

As much as I hate to admit it, casual fans are just as important than the fan who will watch or attend a show every week. There needs to be a balance and right now, it is all geared more to the fans who watch no matter what. Maybe that is why AEW have a storyline playing out between Chris Jericho and Mike Tyson? The more eyes on the product, will generate more money for the company. In the bigger picture, who will attract the most viewers….a match with a wrestler like Braun Strowman or a match with someone like AJ Styles? Does wrestling need to get bigger? Does it need another mega star? Is it fine just the way it is?

Honestly, I see all points of fans with different tastes and preferences. In my own opinion, as great as it is to see a match between two smaller, faster, more athletic wrestlers…there needs to be room for the big men too. Pro wrestling needs a mix of different types and styles. Variety is always welcomed.

  1. Yes indeed Brian Damage, we are in an era of vanilla midgets. Imagine, Chris Jericho, who is about 6′ with his two-inch insoles and about 240 lbs despite pretending to be 225 lbs, looks like a giant in AEW. And yes again, pro wrestling needs larger than life characters. Chris Jericho and Brock Lesnar are the only two big names that come to mind. WWE have already scrapped The Fiend.

Where are The Rocks, the Steve Austins, the Ultimate Warriors, the Hulk Hogans, the Macho Men, the Ric Flairs, the John Cenas?.. Long gone my friend! The closest thing Vince has to offer us is the lame and uncharismatic Roman Reign.

PS (I dig the chick pics!!!)
