This Week in Wrestling 2023 Week 24

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 24th entry of 2023. Today Brian looks at WWE programming potentially moving to Disney and shares all the best wrestling content from this week.

WWE and Disney? When You Wish Upon A Superstar….

This past week, it was announced that the exclusive negotiating window between WWE and both FOX and NBC Universal had expired without an agreement on any new TV deals. That means that WWE is free to negotiate deals with any number of networks and platforms that wish to obtain WWE programming in 2024. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t see Smackdown back on FOX or WWE shows on Peacock, but it looks less likely now.

The frontrunners to get WWE programming reportedly are Amazon Prime and Disney. While Amazon’s streaming service would pick up stuff, it was said that Disney would place WWE shows on their FXX network on cable. No doubt about it, there could be billions of dollars at play here for WWE. That’s good for their shareholders, but from a fan’s perspective…I really do miss the ol’ WWE Network. It can get tiring seeing shows jump from one place to another.

That’s not to say if you are a WWE fan, you won’t go wherever their shows takes you. I just miss the stability of having wrestling on one or two channels and that be that. I always felt that Vince McMahon, Nick Khan, Endeavor or whoever is running things…always wanted to be in a partnership with Disney. I figured Disney would flat out purchase WWE and combine it with Marvel, Star Wars and everything else they own. I guess owning the TV rights to network shows like maybe Smackdown and Raw is just as good.

Of course, one has to wonder if Disney does win rights to programming…how would it affect the current product? Would WWE become “Disneyfied” as was the Star Wars franchise? Would it be made even more kid friendly to appease Disney audiences? Whatever the case may be, I expect WWE to back in the armored trucks and make a ton of money…but at what cost?

  1. WWE and Disney is just plain odd. Disney I think needs to work on their current issues before buying into something else. I know they were just toys, but I was always tickled by all the many open topped vehicles in the GI Joe line in the 1980s. So many Joes and Cobras would be dead.

  2. Personally I feel inside of 10-15 years Disney is going to own pretty much every big name franchise, be it WWE or DC. I just do. They’re are the true real life conglomerate Thanos buying up every property under the sun. Do I agree with Disney buying up WWE? No, but I feel it’s simply inevitable. Thank FUCKING GOD for alternatives in AEW, Impact, MLW, etc.

  3. I look forward to This Week In Wrestling every Saturday. But every time Jenni Neidhart is featured in the NSFW section I seem to enjoy it a little bit more and tend to come back to it a few more times during the week. Appreciate the research!!
