This Week in Wrestling 2022 Week 35

Brian Damage

It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 35th entry of 2022. Today Brian examines the long term future of Billy Corgan’s NWA without a television deal and shares all the best wrestling content from this week.

Can the NWA Survive Without TV?

This past the week the NWA held it’s 74th anniversary show and received mixed reviews. Many fans didn’t even realize they had a pay per view show. Much like people all but forgetting that the MTV Video Music Awards are still a thing. NWA owner Billy Corgan already announced that their 75th anniversary show will take place in St. Louis next year. He also stated that the company is finally evolving into what he always envisioned it to be.

When Corgan first bought the naming rights and trademarks to the National Wrestling Alliance in 2017, he came up with a very unique and interesting concept of returning the NWA to studio wrestling. For me, their show NWA Powerrr was must see on YouTube every week. It was very nostalgic and a fun show overall. Then the Covid pandemic hit and like everything else things changed and had to be restructured. They were off YouTube for a while and secured a deal with the subscription service FITE TV.

The roster seemed to get depleted in that time and not as many eyeballs were on Corgan’s product. The NWA has since returned to YouTube, but something doesn’t feel the same as it once did. Perhaps all the nostalgia wore off? Longtime NWA worlds champion Nick Aldis…who carried the promotion on his back for a few years was replaced as champion by Trevor Murdoch. A few other wrestlers left for the greener pastures of AEW or the WWE.

Right now, one of their top stars and certainly is slowly becoming the workhorse of the NWA is the women’s champion Kamille Brickhouse. As her stock continues to rise..no doubt Impact, AEW and maybe WWE will be on her radar. What Billy Corgan and the NWA need more than ever is a much more viable option for fans to catch their shows. A television deal with a network would be exactly what Corgan needs.

It’s great that the NWA has a small, but passionate following…but a TV deal would really help the company branch out further. I am not going to pretend to know all of the NWA’s financials and whether they are in the red or in the black…but I would have to imagine that this venture hasn’t been all that profitable for Corgan. Again, I don’t know, but a television deal like the one Jeanie Buss secured for Women of Wrestling (WOW) on CBS stations looks to be in longer terms…better shape than the NWA.

I am really hoping Corgan’s NWA a long and profitable future in the wrestling business…I just don’t see an extended future for them without other sources of income. Here’s hoping for the best.

    • It was, but that was Dave Lagana’s fault and he’s gone now, so you can go back.

By the way, I can’t remember the last time I agreed with everything in an entire article, top to bottom. Thanks!

    • No it was the right thing to do because Cornette’s problematic & too toxic to put on air right now. That’s why no other real viable promotion wants to hire his racist ass.

      • You’re entitled to your opinion on the rest of the stuff and the man himself, but if you believe Cornette is racist then you’ve either been listening to the wrong people, don’t know what “racist” means, or you’re just an idiot. I’d love to hear your arguments.

      • You mean like the video you can easily find where he says the N-word a lot? I get it you’re a cult of cuckette fan. We get it.

      • Fact: there is no word you can say that will turn you into a racist. Racism is determined by what you do, not what you say. So we definitely have option 2, perhaps option 3 as well.
Care to try again? With an actual argument this time?

  1. Honestly with a true TV deal unlikely it’s time to for Billy to team up or merge with another wrestling company/organization. MLW or Impact would be ideal, especially Impact with them having a home on an actual tv network already. I’m sure Corrigan probably still has bad blood with Impact, but at this point, I don’t see his company lasting for very much longer. Then again, maybe Jeff Jarret & JCP make him a surprise offer & they team up. Who knows.
